The extensive musical taste thread.

First off, who are you? What qualifies you to judge or dictate someone else's opinions? Is there anything that can actually lend you credibility? Besides what you preach... and your narcissism?
Well it's page 5 of this thread now so I think I can start to discuss my musical taste.

This may get snobby, pretentious, and condescending, so if any of that offends you: *EARMUFFS*

Let's just go with some tidbits first, then I want to talk with Brock (and whoever else) about ambient, since I know he likes Helios, he must know more.

- my top 10 most listened to bands on last.fm are the following genres:

post-rock

grunge

experimental rock/electronic

shoegaze

prog-rock/metal

ambient techno

post-rock/electronic

IDM

indie rock

experimental ambient/noise

- less than 10% of the CDs I have purchased in the past 3 years can be found in any normal music store

- I can think of at least 10 albums that I love with 4 or less songs on them, all 40+ minute albums.

- my favorite musical instrument is the synthesizer

- I almost never pay attention to or even hear lyrics. I don't know the lyrics to most of my favorite songs (the ones that even have lyrics).

That's enough for now. Hahah, I'm such an *******. This thread is fun though.

Here is another opinion of mine, feel free to agree (haha) or disagree:

People that don't like ambient music at all, or refuse to listen to anything that is ambient, are impatient, have pathetic attention span, and almost no conception of depth or subtle nuance in music.

Now, there is a difference in simply not liking the ambient music you have heard, and not liking ambient music period. I can understand if someone doesn't like ambient music after they have heard it and they give good reasons, but there are many people that just dismiss it or complain about it being boring. Those are the people I am referring to.

so let me see if I understand this thread. The sole purpose is to see if a poster in this thread has good taste? What exactly does this prove? Who has the right to say said person has good taste in music? Debating music is like debating about religion. You aren't gonna change someones point of view, it's like talking to a brick wall.

I have an open mind for music, as in I'll listen to something once and see if I like it or not. I consider myself a good candidate at discussing music or why music is good or not because music has been a huge part of my life. I've been in a few bands, I've played guitar for a few years, I've played drums for a while and I know how to play bass I just don't really. My knowledge for music helps me determine if a certain group is decent or not. A few things I look for would be technicality in the music, lyrics, emotion, the time signature(different timings, unique ones) or if the band has more than just one hit. Music is also a form of art, if they can express there views in ways besides lyrics... solely the music(instruments) they deserve a bow. If you don't understand what I mean, maybe you should listen to artists that don't use lyrics.

I'm not sure if that's what you are looking for but that's what I'll contribute.

electronic art music(lol)? Well I would call it house somewhat just b/c it uses a synthesizer a lot. I would almost call it ambient house as well. It creates a very chill atmosphere.
All electronic music uses a synth, but it is indeed house. Not that cheesy trance crap 99% of people associate electronic music with.

My daily taste in music changes with my mood, the weather, what people i'm around, what I'm thinking about, events in my life, girls i'm dating, images I see, the internet, and memories about past times.

I can basically tell you that you can, in no way what-so-ever, tell another person that they have bad taste in music, because different types of music effect different people in different ways...

First off, who are you? What qualifies you to judge or dictate someone else's opinions? Is there anything that can actually lend you credibility? Besides what you preach... and your narcissism?
Credibility? I don't know, what are you looking for? I don't have a doctorate in music, sorry to disappoint. I do know a fair bit about music though.

Want me to list what instruments I've played? Want me to list all the different genres I have delved into and have a respectable knowledge of? This thread is already pure wankery so I guess I will indulge myself and list them for your amusement/pleasure/sorrow.

Played saxophone 3 years in middle school.

Played bass guitar 4 years in high school.

Played guitar for 8 years, never seriously, just at an amateur level.

Played keyboard off and on for 6 years. Not very good. Just for amusement mostly.

Played synthesizer for a year. I have an Alesis Ion, which has so many features it's ridiculous, but I'm learning slowly. I need to take piano lessons, and get a keyboard amp so I can stop using my guitar amp for it. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

Hmm, genres. This is a general idea of everything I listen to/have listened to/am acquainted with. Will start with the most obvious and move down.

Classic Rock - know the basics and a bit more. From Yes, Jeff Beck, the Dead, Zappa, blah blah etc etc, everyone knows classic rock.

Jazz - know 30s big band and some early sax stuff, not much modern cept Dave Clark and Bela Fleck

Blues - SRV is a God. Know a small amount about chicago blues and other blues, Guy, Allison, King, King, Waters, Collins.

Classical - not much. nothing more than your average joe schmoe, unfortunately. Wish I did.

Rap - very little compared to the rest of this forum and the rest of america, wont find me losing sleep over that though.

Grunge - Pumpkins ****in rule. PJ is/was badass, was favorite band for many years, was obsessed in high school (who wasnt). Screaming Trees are badass. AiC forever, used to be 2nd favorite band after PJ. SG is pretty good. Nirvana is ok. Some other grunge is good.

Now for the fun stuff:

Indie rock - know a lot. I'm not talking about the Killers, I'm talking about Bedhead, Sparklehorse, Slint, Mercury Rev, you name it, I know it.

Indie pop - same story. Stereolab = one of favorite bands. Flaming Lips, Low, Broadcast, Air, name it, know it.

Metal (more popular type) - melodic death I know a decent amount about. In flames, ATG, Dark tranq, amon amarth, haunted, swallow the sun, blah blah. Good stuff mostly.

Power metal - blind guardian, hammerfall, freedom call, gamma ray, children of bodom, etcccccccc

dance/techno/electronic - Yay. Daft Punk, Basement Jaxx, Royksopp, Orbital, Global Comm, Lindstrom, Massive attack (and other trip-hop), booka shade, etc etc blah blah

80s stuff - jesus and mary chain, joy division, talking heads, depeche mode, cocteau twins, sonic youth... dont like too much else from the 80s though

Now stuff most of you have probably never heard of, but isn't really that unheard of for "music people" or whatever:

post-rock - was my favorite genre for a couple years. I'm an expert. From the pre-beginnings (slint) to the real beginnings (tortoise, mid 90s) to the primetime (later 90s, mogwai (favorite band), labradford, godspeed) to more indie acceptable era (early 00s, sigur ros, eits, gybe becomes legendary) to recent (lot of trash, but 65dos, caspian, hammock, a few others, are good) I have like 200 post-rock CDs. This is my genre dawg.

IDM - another favorite genre. the 'pusher. AFX. u-****in-ziq. plaid. boC. kid 606. aaron funk. amon tobin, that silly latin dude. proem. apparat. outputmessage. luke vib b b bert. mouse on mars. AUTECHRE. love it all. You may be wondering wtf IDM means. Stands for "intelligent dance music". Don't blame me, I didnt invent the name.

other electronic stuff - dunno what to put here, mostly "ambient" electronic, but not really ambient. some DNB. a smattering of techno/trance (very little) ulrich schnauss, ISAN, sasha, bjork, arovane, seefeel, prodigy. whatever else electronic i listen to, which is a lot. a lot of electronic pop, too.

And finally, stuff most noone has ever heard of, and probably never will. And if you listened to it, you would probably think it either wasn't music, or was utter and complete shite, because your musical taste sucks (haha!):

Experimental ambient/noise - Yay. Love this genre to death. Including pure noise, neo-classical, early ambient, acoustic ambient, dark ambient (MUAHAHA) Merzbow. Fennesz. Oval. Pan Sonic. Helios. Eno. Belong. Hecker. Eluvium. Lustmord. Raison Detre. Coil. Experimental Audio Research. Flying Saucer Attack. Yume Bitsu. Amp. Fuxa. Fridge. SOTL. JJ. Manual. Jan Jelinek. List goes onnnnn and onnnnnn.

Black metal - You had to know this was coming. See thread "Black Metal" for more discussion. I don't know shit about this compared to the "TRVE BLACK METALLERS" that only listen to metal, but I know a good bit. Favorite bands: Weakling, Deathspell Omega, Xasthur, Emperor, Ulver, Taake, Satyricon, Judas Iscariot, Nae'blis, Marduk, Immmortal, the rest of the shit in that thread, and lots more.

Folk metal - Yay, this is also fun, though I don't know as much about this as black. Ensiferum. Moonsorrow. Thyrfing. Finntroll. Tyr. Summoning. Bal-sagoth. Enslaved. Windir. Good shit. Not as XTREME as black metal.

Yep. That's about all I listen to. With a smattering of other shit I probably forgot to mention, like the occasional pop, industrial, hard rock, etc.

I like you. You seem like an honest and intelligent guy. I liked that post too. So let me try to answer some of your questions.

I guess I really just want to discuss music. It's hard to find people who like the same stuff as me in one area, let alone all areas. I like to hear about people who listen to all sorts of crazy shit as well. I also like to make fun of, perhaps jokingly, perhaps not, those who only listen to the crap on the radio or other limited genres. Any kind of discussion is good, and in that sense, this thread has been successful already.

There may never be any talk of who actually has good taste or not, whatever, but as long as people are in here talking up some shit I'm happy.

Btw, nothing in this thread, or on this forum, or on the internet, proves anything. So no, the point of this thread is not to prove that I have the widest taste here. It's just to wank. And discuss.

Lastly, but maybe most importantly, is I like the reasons that you give for being able to say whether music is good or not. I think I can also give a pretty good, somewhat unbiased (when I choose to be unbiased) opinion on whether something is good or not based on my experiences, which are similar to yours. But I do think that some people are in better positions to judge taste than others.

By no means do I think I have the best taste ever. I'm constantly discovering new genres, and I laugh at myself 6 months ago because of the things I didn't know. There are people I know who have better taste and more knowledge than myself, and I respect them a lot. I also can acknowledge when someone does have better taste than me, so obviously it can't be completely subjective, if I can think that what I like isn't as good as what someone else likes.
