Dawkins is God. I love that guy. His book "The Selfish Gene" is a friggen masterpice. It is probably the most liberating and influential book I have ever read. If you study his research you will NEVER look at the world again because you can't....he forces you to confront the very process by which you acquire your self-concept and belief systems.

It has been documented that once something new comes along that does not agree with your currently held belief system, it will be rejected by the ego...WHETHER IT IS FACTUAL OR NOT!! THerefore what he shows (and many other have have as well, or at least have contributed - Jung, Graves, etc) is that the avg person by the age of 20 or so can no longer think for him/her self and basically just exists - NOT LIVES - like a robot with very little if any access to their own rational mind!!

Hey man, ive been raised Catholic and have always been questioning my faith...because it seems like the bible contradicts itself countless times. Anyways, if you have a time could you answer this for me?
If God is so loving and merciful, why would he make a soul who he knew would have to send to Hell?

God is omnipotent and omniscient, he knows EVERYTHING. If he knows everything, he knows exactly what choices you're going to make according to your free will...before you're even created. If he knows you're going to make bad choices and **** yourself to hell...why make you in the first place?

And dont give me that bullshit that predestination isnt real...because according to the Bible it HAS to be since God is omniscient and omnipotent.

God cannot be such a loving and merciful person if he makes you TO GO TO HELL and suffer eternally...seems kind of cruel.

Would you put a mouse in the microwave? You know whats going to happen...You know its going to suffer...Why do it?

I didnt ask if you'd place the mouse in the microwave, I asked if you'd place the mouse in the microwave and turn it on with the intent to make it suffer. You know putting the mouse in the microwave and turning it on will make it suffer terribly (although much less than being ****ed eternally)

i already covered that, survival of the fittest.

that would be the evolution side of it.

i covered that in like the first two or three posts i'm sure. so take yourself and foxpro5 with, and actually read the post. this is basic stuff that we all learned way back when. please try again.

You do realize that is just a defense mechanism? He has not always been that way. It is not his fault, it is just the way he has evolved.

Anywho, the reason I posted this thread was to highlight how little progress we have made as a species in our quest for understanding the purpose and meaning of life. Now we have made tremendous advances in science and technology...we can see far into the cosmos...and down to the sub molecular level...BUT we HAVE NOT made much in terms of being rational, compassionate and logical thinkers who have been given the gift of inquiry as a means to understand OURSELVES!!!

Do compassionate and loving people nuke hundereds of thousands of people at temperatures reaching that of the surface of the sun?

Do intelligent people fill church piews on Sunday morning and beg for forgiveness yet turn around and kill their neighbors, poison the Earth and then run for office for yet another term?

Have we evolved???
