The Bigger The Better

someone once told me that the bigger the voice coil and magnet the better speaker/sub and also the bigger the cone surround
is this true?
No. No. And No.

Magnet size means absolutely nothing. Neo magnets for example. Extremely small, but extremely powerful.

Cone surround size means absolutely nothing.....other than the fact that too wide of a surround can eat up cone area, decreasing displacement (subsequently decreasing output).

Voice coil size; bigger isn't inherently better. If a 2" coil fits the criteria for a certain sub, there's no need to go up to 3". But, *in general*, the larger the coil size, the more thermal power handling a subwoofer has. There are some other techno-babble things going on with a different sized coil.....but having a bigger coil doesn't inherently make one sub better than the other.

depends on the sub. if its from a good company,it probably is suited with what it is INTENDED. I agree huge surrounds decrease cone area.as far as the magnet/voice coil question, for the way I think he is asking it, they seem to be large on the subs us here in this forum tend to buy. Does NOT mean smaller voice coil/magnet isnt just as good.

'most' cases, the larger magent structure is a WOW factor only....a large fat surround looks good, makes people think it has a huge Xmax, but not always, and also, when you have that much surround, you loose actual Sd...
