TC Sounds LMS Ultra 18" vs. RE Audio XXX 18"

the XXX is a better HT driver and both on rated power the XXX last longer.
The TC will play higher to blend with mids better but the cone will have weird resonances if you try to play it to high though.

The XXX is better on the low notes than the LMS but the lms is no slouch, I'd still run the XXX because of tc sounds metal cones.
have you ever heard an lms? best low end driver out there, period. also probably the best home theater driver. lms coil technology is king at under 30hz. the resonances are at around the 80-100hz range. the 60hz+ range on the lms is their only downfall. but subs shouldn't be playing in that range anyways

yeah he said the xxx gets lower better? the whole point of the lms is the quality of the low end. its unreal. the xxx is a great sub too but lms beats it. although i will say when i had my soundstream xxx it definitely got a hell of a lot lower than the lms with much more authority but those 2 subs r apples and oranges and the ss xxx has terrible sound quality as far as reactiveness.

Couple of things.. From anyone who has used both drivers you guys have it basically backwards.. The LMS has a better top end than the XXX. It's a lower inductance higher BL driver so that makes sense. Secondly, the LMS will handle power better than the XXX. The XXX in a sealed alignement will play louder lower though, especially if you have room for a big box 6-8 cubes.

A metal cone driver shouldn't have any resonances until 200hz or higher assuming it's a stiff cone. I think the aluminum cone drivers I have have a resonance around 300ish.

These drivers have been compared to death on a few HT forums.

i've never heard the new xxx line, but literally about every comparison i've read has the lms getting lower, louder, and more power handling.
Yup...same here

Leaning heavily towards the LMS unless I can find an undeniable reason to go with the XXX18

preference has so much effect on sound quality its hard to tell. both sound great, on paper an lms will sound better because it's linear, but some people don't like that. i've done installs for people who love the sound of their dc level 5 tuned at 35hz, and i had one guy listen to my lms and didn't think it sounded that good, and it was tuned at 25hz lol

LMS Ultra's use "LMS technology", which is a fancy way of saying a progressive voice coil, the original XXX uses xbl^2, which is a fancy way of saying the motor design helps to maintain a predictable and uniform magnetic field within the operating range of the coil's motion. The new XXX uses split-gap (iirc). All of these methods are BL optimizers, all 3 subs maintain a relatively flat BL curve within their operating range. So linearity is not the difference. What differs between them is how the motor designs affect inductance, but even that isn't a black and white situation, since a higher or lower inductance is not always advantageous.

Hold the phone..... so your saying inductance is not the king ruling factor when it comes to SQ? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
