Tape adapter does not work with 2000 Passat

I am trying to listen to my mp3 via tape adapter, but it gives me a "tape error" message, when I insert it. It is a Phillips tape adapter. Are these not compatible with the Passat Monsoon tape deck? i tried it with my max since i didnt get my system installed yet. it either gave me an error message or when it did play, if the bass hit too hard, the tape would eject. i just decided to listen to the radio for now since my cd player doesn't even work.
