Hello,

I would like to know if this would work:

MP3 player jack in dash connected to

amp in trunk connected to

two subwoofers and

two or four smaller speakers

I don't want a head unit if I can avoid it...can I connect an MP3 just to the amp?

What type of amp would I need?

You can't do this.

Sounds like you would need a 5 or 6 channel amp, and a line driver or 2 if you want to hook mp3 straight to an amp.
