SX18, sq, and 18's sound nasty....

Or do they? :tomatofac

I bet we've all heard the generalization, "the bigger the sub, the more like *** it sounds."

I haven't heard any of this 1st hand since most people I know have 10's or 12's. But from what I gather from forums like these, sq isn't so much sub size dependent as it is box and install dependent. I'm sure the design of the driver matters as well, as some subs are designed for spl, some sq, some a little of both.

So my question is for anyone that's heard this giant sub in something other than a spl install. My chances may be low of finding anyone with experience here, but what the hell. How did it sound? It'd be nice to freak some friends out with a loud, yet good sounding huge sub. :boobies:

I have 4.3ft before displacement sealed and 1200x1 @12.5V @ 1 ohm.

why else would you get a sub like this? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif huge *** box, tons of power, not exactly the best SQ design around, hehe...although I've heard they sound quite nice.

SQL? I guess it could be for folks that want loud and clear //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/toast.gif.bc0657bf54b9ee653b6438524461341e.gif For me, it works for the room I have sealed, the power I have, and should get louder just by displacement.

I want quite a bit louder than what I have. I know one way is ported, another is displacement. Every ported box I model up on WINISD shows a huge bump in low frequency response that I don't want. A little exageration would be fine, but this is showing 10-15 db gains lol. And I've also read people saying that you'll get this extremely exagerated low end ported. And of course more people say sealed sounds better and is better for rock/metal that I mostly listen too.

So I figure I may be able to find a sub that offers lots more displacement, works with my box/amp, and has good sq. I just don't want to guess on the sq //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/uhoh.gif.c07307dd22ee7e63e22fc8e9c614d1fd.gif

Larger subs being sloppier is a myth. An 18 will simply put out so much bass that most SQ competitors will choose a smaller sub to blend better with their front stage, and many street beaters will enjoy their bass-heavy systems which would make them seem boomy or sloppy.

18's dont have the punch as 10's/12's do. But they have sweet low end
Depends where you cross it over. Sure, a 10" may be able to be crossed higher to give you the "punch" but thats what your frontstage should be doing, not you sub. A sub makes subbass, not "punch" //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

exactly.

edit: When sizing subs, if you are truely into SQ rather than just boomin, you should be looking at sub size to blend with your front stage, in terms of output, rather than for some notion that big subs sound worse.

are you serious! , man like i already knew that.

Ah yes I could just pick a sub to blend in, but sometimes I want to wang :veryexcit

Most of the time, I listen to rock/metal and I don't want the bass really exagerated. Yet there are some songs I listen to that have electronic bass hits that distort on my subs now //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/bawling.gif.6287aa5d1d447c8af063fc9466e822ef.gif So there's another reason for more spl.

I imagine I'll be crossing things over about 80, maybe a little lower if I get the RE comps to replace my CL61's.

So I guess my needs are sql....kind of a crossroads :veryhappy
