So my brother in law graduated high school and now has a new to him car (VW Passat) and a first big boy job with money burning a hole in his pocket. He wants to put a small system in it and he wants to start with the sub/amp setup and build as he goes. He wants to stay around $200 for sub(s) and amp (I think he’ll go to $250). Got any recommendations? I have no experience with this cheap of a build

Good luck. What about the sub box?

Try crutchfield.com. They offer suggestions for your vehicles. You can select components based on your budget. They have a good reputation for selling decent equipment.

And yet you come back with a recommendation for Skarbage and Hifonics, lol. Neither of which are worth the time. Even if you are joking everyone around here is not going to buy Skar if they have any brains. Only their amps are worth looking at and even then...I refuse to give money to them. I just couldn't bring myself to do it when I was looking for an amplifier.

Oh no you put me in a post oh whatever shall I do...nothing,lol.

Facts are there tons of options out there for subwoofers and yeah I bought the American Bass TNT-1044s and tbh while they sound nice....I could have gotten the same kind of sound out of a Alpine Type S or Soundqubed or something in that 200-250 range for both. If I could afford 500 dollar subs then I would but I can't being disabled. Anything under 150 a sub is going to be damn close to sounding the same. I've had the Alpine Type S in the past in a 12" and they sounded really good. I only settled on the AB TNTs because they were in stock and I wouldn't have to wait 2-4 months for something else to come in stock.

So, recommend something for under $250. Criticize all you want, but I answered the question at hand. Please notice the laughing emoji's on my replies. We can all play games. You didn't even have the balls to try and answer the OP's question.

So, recommend a sub, box, and amp for the OP's budget? Without recommending American Bass. People want to bust my balls for recommending AB.

Bobby...some of us are busy. Also just because someone hasn't responded in 2 minutes doesn't mean they are not typing something out so bite me. Also as state below...he never said he wanted a box! So stuff your budget crap. I know cliff enough that he will go a little higher

Didn't even have the balls to try and answer the OP's question...Probably because I was responding to the fact you put me in a picture ya dumbass!

Did I EVER SAY a DD is SUPER CHEAP! Good grief talk about grasping at straws there slick and putting words into someone else's mouth/post. Yeah he busts your balls because your go to is AB and Taramps every single time. Does Taramps have their place...yeah they do in some spots there is no denying that. Power in a small footprint. I would still take Korean over them in a heartbeat.

1st off he never said he wanted a box, knowing Cliff he will build it himself for his Brother in law, As far as an amp and Sub...As I said I only posted because of you putting me in a picture nothing more.

Plus used is always an option when you in that price range. I would go 1 10" or 1 12" Dual 2 ohm in any number of subs. 120 bucks buys you a Alpine Type S in a 10" version which is 600 RMS

Also knowing Cliff he is looking at this deal right now and the price is right. Those subs are 240 dollars total for both then the amp went for around 150-180.

Idk where you get that garbage but w/e. I have better things to do then argue with someone on the internet.

Also I gave him an option...a much BETTER option then you did. Those Skarbage boxes are known to fall apart in little as a week, multiple reports on car audio forums on this. Hifonics is a sh*t company now and isn't worth spending 2 dollars on one of their amplifiers. And Skar subs & speakers? Think that has been gone over enough on these forums and other forums as to the crookedness of the owner. You tell me to keep the budget in mind for the OP and your option total was 320 dollars and in less then a minute I found one that was 5 bucks more and is hell of a lot better of an option then that stuff.

I'm done I have to call and deal with walmart for a sh*t ghost order that a week later still isn't off my CC.

Also tell him to put that money into a roth IRA before spending it on something stupid like garbage flea market subs and amps. Only when he maxes out the 6k a year contribution is when he should buy car audio IMO. He needs to learn how to pay himself first and keep the wealth he earns. Or learn a side hustle that gets him to that point faster so he can buy quality equipment that achieves results and last long. Because right now hes heading straight for the "imma be forever poor" trap aka stuck in the rat race.

You have no idea how much I say these things to him and his brother. They have no idea how the world works. It’s very sad actually. I’ve been telling him to not just buy cheap junk but he’s going to do it anyway so I figured maybe I’d help him out (he was going to buy Planet Audio 3000 watt subs!)
