Subwoofers with sound quality and questions about subs

I have been looking around at buying subwoofers for a while but can't seem to find the right ones. I currently have a Chevy cavalier. I do not know if I should go with 2 10 inch subs or 2 12 inch subs. What subs should I go with I was looking at the sundown sa 10 and 12 but I would like to see other brands that are similar.

Thanks,

Have a nice day

what are you after from your bass? tight and clean, or loud and boomy?

So maybe you want a sealed design. It'll generally provide for a 'cleaner' sound (a ported enclosure could also be designed to sound nice), but a sealed enclosure will provide a flatter response curve, which is usually more practical if you're looking for true sound quality. A correctly designed ported box will be much more efficient (louder) than a sealed one, but you may be sacrificing some aspects of sound quality. A ported enclosure will also be much larger. A pair of SA-10s could fit in a relatively small enclosure, and I think they would impress you in a ported box. 12s would require a larger enclosure, but would provide for more output.

I have a pair of 15's I may part with that will only need 3 cubes between them in airspace. Most would agree they are a decent sq woofer that loves the bottom end.

Vented enclosures can be designed to provide a flat response curve and they will always, have a lower F3 than sealed enclosures using the same sub.

If you want tight and accurate bass response that reaches low, a low compliance high EBP sub in a flat ported box will do it and do it well.

Personally, I'd x off some of the known lower quality brands and then find a sub that meets my criteria... regardless of the name on it.

You can't go wrong with Sundown SA subs... They are Very durable, have descent output, as well as sound quality if set up properly... The Obsidian Audio Subs are very close to The Sundown SA line for a bit cheaper if you can find those... If you don't want to give up too much trunk space I'd do a set of SA8 v.2's, a set of 10's, or a single 12 or 15 depending on your listening habits and goals to meet your needs... I ran a single SA-12 on a clean 800-1k rms in a TRUNK for almost a year that the rear seats didn't even fold down on, and I was quite happy with it... Still had a lot of trunk space too //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Ive also got a 12inch version that works great in 2cubes ported or 1cube sealed. When it released it was compared to the jl w6 directly.

trying to gett 200 for it shipped to you door step.

If you want to save trunk space, go with one sealed box subwoofer. If you need more sound, then two sealed or one in ported box. The ported box must be custom designed and built for each sub, so that's more expensive/harder. With sealed, you just need to right volume and make sure it uses decent quality mdf or other material. A sealed box system can be pretty loud too, but you will have to invest into a subwoofer with more excursion and a better amplifier.

You need to list a budget that you are willing to spend on the subs, what amp you are intending to power them with etc.

With what you listed as requirements you're leaving yourself open to a huge variety and really not narrowing down your options. You want " tight, clean, loud". Remember that everyone's ear is subjective, one persons idea of clean is not the same as others.

Loud is dependant on power, box, cabin gain, cone area etc.

tight, are you referring to a sub that has a hard hit, can continually hit that hard note, etc? Something that'll excel at hard rock?

Clean, my opinion is that this is based on the box design, and install mostly. Obviously a poorly designed woofer will sound like poo.

You want the ability to get loud, look at our Nuclear and Plutonium lines. They'll take a ton of power and sound excellent in doing so.

You want affordable and loud, look at our Radioactive SPL subs, they're quite affordable.

I always take more surface area when it is an option. 2 12s as long as all else is equal.

You have some decisions to make before buying a sub. Try to identify your overall budget, what amp you want to use, whether or a sealed enclosure guy or ported, etc. this all needs to be taken into account when you choose a sub.

Good luck and keep us all posted on your choice.

Sundown is not a sound quality brand. You have been reading the forum kool aid that they sound great blah blah blah. I have no problem with sundown but completely hate the fact that every forum you go to has people pushing them as great sounding subs. These people either don't know what the hell great sounding subs are or haven't heard anything better so assume that what they are hearing is great sound. Sundown subs are bulletproof and will get loud. Don't play them off as anything else. To the OP... if you are not sure what you are thinking of as SQ then please let us know. Are there any subs you have heard that you liked the sound of? Not everyone likes subs that can blend with the front stage seamlessly etc and like more of an overpowering substage. There is nothing wrong with that but it isnt SQ.
