I was browsing some video's on YouTube and came across this :

After reading the description i became puzzled in thinking that a subwoofer bottoming out and on the edge of being damaged could cause an amp to go into protect ? This just doesnt seem right. Maybe im misunderstanding it but its quoted :

"We actually could get more excursion from it but the coil would bottom out and send the amp into protect."

From my understanding the quote, they are saying a sub bottoming out is sending the amp into protection ? It has always been my understanding that the subwoofer determines the load on the amplifier but in no other way, shape, or form can it directly cause an amplifier to shut off or go into protection mode.
