Subwoofer Potential (Experts?)

aren't most subs rated at 86 db/W/1m, of all the subs i've ever ran (all 12's) the sensitivity of them was either 86 or 89.
yes

thats why i like old school subs...before things were based on nothing but power

most manufacturers seem to care more about power handeling than any other spec

That is incorrect considering most efficiency is taken at 1,000hz. . And there again there are no woofers that are exactly alike. That would port the same and work in the same box and same suspension . and even in theory IF there was a woofer was the exact same as the other. And even if they did do both test the same (most test are done totally different whether it be freq or environment . Or free air or in a box. And in a box it would be different. i am sure probably only 20 percent of EFF test are done the same way. And those are the 1000hz ones which mean jack. other then that maybe 1 percent after that are done with the same factors. Then you have to find two of the same woofers. And i also did fail to state. If the woofer was the same in every way. It also would have the same efficiency thus making efficiency pointless. Now if you can make it a standard that all drivers are tested at 45hz. It would be a little more accurate. but then you would still have to take into consideration the boxes. And the potential boxes that can be used. Did we miss the 155db with 2000 watts and two 12's that have a efficiency rating of 85db? so are you telling me off that same power the ones of 95 would be 10 db louder? come on. Actually . Honestly unless somebody else can point out another system. i am pretty sure the is the most efficient 2000 watts in a car on the planet

only 89 one i ran was a Pioneer one, and they seem to be always every year rated at 89, rf's at 86, Infinity at 96, and Kenwood's at 93 db/W/1m, but you take the sub box for them in effect and it's way more then that.

sorry guys this interests me.

Not to be mean brian. But if both woofers were 100 percent equal. Then it would be the same woofer. it couldn't have a different sens. It is 100 percent impossible. If all the t/s parameters and mms and bl etc were the same. Efficiency wouldn't matter still cause the only way to get different efficiency would to be put them in different boxes lol

you mean you dont use subs as your mid range? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.giflol
i have before //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Again, I didn't say 100% equal. I just said other factors were equal if not very close. And this is only hypothetical of course, but I bet I could find two drivers which work best in similar enclosures and have similar power handling but have different sensitivity ratings. Which one would be louder? I'm not saying identical T/S specs and what not, but similar enclosure and similar power handling. That is when sensitivity will make a difference in SPL.

Still not true cause probably only about 1 percent of all sens test are done with equal test situations excluding 1khz test but those are pointless. there are no subs currently out that the standard of sensitivity testing would make a measurable difference in spl. you would have to make sure both test were done identical and still bet it wouldn't matter more then a few 10th's

I do not think that this is accurate
It is accurate in theory and is a close approximate in reality. It takes 10x the power to increase output by 10 db. Decibels are measured on a logarithmic scale. The perception of a 10 dB increase is perceived as being roughly twice as loud. A 95db/1W/1m system would sound twice as loud as an 85db/1W/1m system. The latter system would need 10W to play at 95 db.

BS. cause sens is taken free air with no load. no concept of how the box will affect the woofer. and motor strength isn't considered. not even in theory this is correct. perhaps theory on leaving some important stuff like that out
