Subwoofer placement from back wall

So I’m building a box for 2 subs but I’m pretty limited on space. I know from experience that rear firing makes the subs louder (or seem that way). My question is, close to the back wall can I get without causing problems like the sound degrading? The subs have a 3 inch throw. Would 6 inches from the wall be enough or should I consider firing up?
