Subwoofer is F'd up, what is wrong?

Well was it working before or did you buy it locked up like that?

When a cone locks up that means either the voice coil overheated and came apart in the coil gap or the sub bottomed out so hard(from too much power/wrong ported box) that it deformed the voice coil former and are now scraping against the coil gap in the magnet. Either way the sub is toast and will need a recone.
I sold this sub to someone in perfect working order. I got an email from him sometime after it shipped saying I sent him a blown sub.

So I refunded him the cost of the sub and payed shipping BOTH ways, so he was out maybe a couple bucks and some time. And I get this back, it was also shipped carelessly.

I bought the sub. It was locked when I got it. I buy plenty of stuff, I spend plenty of money. I have gotten some bad stuff and some good stuff. Coil's toast. You did refund so cool. Don't bad mouth me- I don't have sour grapes over your sub.

Just bought another sub off a guy here and another one last week locally.

I am not your problem.

A sub cant be locked up just out of the blue. The only way it could have happened in shipping is if the motor shifted. Other than that, if it wasnt locked up when you sent it, then it wasnt locked up when he recieved it.

frequently i'm not sure but if the sub got banged around hard enough in shipping the motor could potentially shift enough to lock the coil up in the gap. in this case you'd need a recone and a realignment of your subs motor.

You have been on here a matter of months and have 75 posts. And where the hell did I post your name anywhere?

Hmm sounds sketchy. If it was in perfect working order when you shipped it, either the motor shifted in shipment or this guy blew it and isn't fessing up to it. Start tearing it apart to try to find the culprit. Should be easy to tell

I have never taken apart a sub. What am I supposed to look for?

A burnt voicecoil. Or once you get it taken apart look down into the motor and see if it looks like its centered or shifted to one side. You can't really hurt it at this point unless you drop it and break the magnet or basket.

Well it looks as though a motor shift is possible. A few minutes after I pulled the cone out I heard a clang, and the magnet in the middle su cked into the one on the side closing the gap on one side completely.

Also what does a blown voice coil look like?

Lol that would be a major shifted motor. A blown coil will either be black and burned through at one point or completely unraveled.

Well looks like I found two issues. Though the state the box came to me was a disaster. I very well could have shifted on the return trip, basically it was sent back the same way it came (as requested) but it looked like the sub was set in the box and the packing material was thrown in on top of it.

I will never know and it is over now...... So how do you fix a motor shift?
