subwoofer difference in sound

i just got all new speakers for my car and a new head unit. it sounds a lot better than it did before but i'm still using the 6.5" factory subwoofer. i always want to turn up the music louder when i'm driving, but when it gets too loud it sounds kind of high pitched and hurts my ears because of the ringing, but it doesn't sound like it has enough bass. if i adjust the bass and treble settings so i can turn the volume up higher, it just sounds distorted and not too good either. do you think if i got a new sub it would make a big difference in sound? i like to turn my music up louder, but not if it hurts my ears. it also might be the noise from the road that makes the music not sound as good, because it definitely sounds better when i'm not driving, and my car and tires make the road sound really loud (i have a 2000 sentra se).

by the way the speakers i have are polk db650s in front and polk db675s in back. i also have the stock tweeters and stock 6.5" sub, which is slightly blown out i think (but not too badly). i have a Kenwood KDC-MP435U head unit: http://www.amazon.com/Kenwood-KDC-MP435U-player-Full-DIN-dash/dp/B000OFL53C

someone recommended disconnecting the tweeters and getting a separate amp for my speakers. what do you guys think?

disconnect stock tweeters and run 75 x 2 to your front speakers, I recomend MTX blue thunder pro 75 x2 real cheap used and great sound

2. spend a good $100 on sound deadening your floor and firewall and shock towers to kill road noise.

3. Look into Infinity basslink for a $250 plug and play subwoofer that will gove you at least as much bass as it sounds like you need.

you might as well just bring it to a shop and have them do it.

All he is saying is to unplug the tweeters completely from the rear of the Head unit, and to buy some sound deadener online and put it on the sheet metal under the car[et in your car.

I would like to know how the tweeters in a stock system connect to the head unit. Do they connect to a filter along with the coaxial, then to the head unit?

This may help you figure out how to disconnect the stock tweeter. I think the cable going to your head unit from your tweets shares power to your coaxial. I don't think they are separate wires, but they could be.

That would work... Make sure you cut it far enough down on the wire so that if you wanted to hook the tweeters back up you would have room to strip the wire and splice them.

Doesn't your head unit have an equalizer? If so, just turn the higher end frequencies down a notch or two. Tweeters are usually a good thing if they aren't too bright, which is what you are describing.

Yeah it has an equalizer but i **** at using it right. it always ends up sounding weird in some way when i try to fix it.
