Subwoofer crossover freq

What frequencies does a subwoofer normally handle?

I have a Diamond Audio HEX MD12.4 and when I set the crossover on my HU above 40HZ, the bass starts to sound sloppy. But, if I set it at 40HZ, there is a lot less punch. Something seems wrong.

most people usually low pass their subs at 100 Hz or lower...I have mine set to 80 Hz right now.

What kind of enclosure do you have?

And where is your sub level set at?? If you have it set too high, then that could be the reason for the sloppyness when setting the xover higher.

In my old car, I had my Pioneer HU's lowpass set at 50hz, just as an FYI

.8ft^3 sealed which is what DA recommends in the manual. I built it myself so the problem may lie there. Anything I should be checking?

The only way I know to check if it's sealed properly is to push the cone down carefully and see how long it takes to come back up. It doesn't go down too far with moderate force and I don't want to cause any damage to the speaker but I don't hear any air leaks and it does seem to come back up slowly.

The sub is rated at 800W and the amp is a PG M100 rated at 500W bridged mono. I set the gain according to JL's gain setting tutorial and the clipping light on the amp is not flashing.

Oh, and it happens even at moderate volume.

I packed in some polyfill and it seems to have helped quite a bit. I think I was hearing the box resonate. Is there anything I can try to make it better?
