I'm on the fence and would like some advise. I have a 2008 Superduty Crew Cab and I'm doing a system in it. I currently have a 2005 (same truck) with a system in it. My goal is to do a better system in the new truck. The 2005 has a Eclipse 5510 head unit, a 150.4 PDX alpine amp running a set of 6.5 ZR's up front bi-wired. No speakers in the back doors at all and a JL 500.1 running two JL 10w3's. I am happy with the sound. However, would like to do a better one in the 2008 truck.
In the 05' I moved the back seat up several inches in order to make and install a forward firing enclosure. I'm not a big fan of that set up and moving the seat forward was difficult to do cleanly because of the angle of the front ear style mounts. Because of this I decided to raise the seat on the new one. It took two days to do this but, it turned out great.
I pulled the split bench out, dismantled the entire unit, both bottoms, both backs, hardware and so on. Once I was down to the three brackets I cut off the front ears and welded them to a cut to fit 3" piece of 3/16 square stock. Once I got that done I welded the factory seat brackets to the top of the square stock, capped the openings, painted it all textured black just like they were from the factory and bolted it all back in the truck. They look nice, they are solid as a rock, they maintane all stock mounting holes and give me a heck of lot more room for base.
Now that you're up to speed I need some advise on which way to go. I was planning on doing two down firing enclosures with 12's. However, even with the elevated seat hieght there is not enough room. I have only 8 inches under the seat which isn't enough room to do down firing with a set of 12's due to the fact they will bottom out against the floor of the during full expansion. Kind of bummed about that. But, that's life. The good news is I now have enough room to build a down firing box behind the seat. Although, only enough room for 8's.
I have zero experience with 8's and would like some advise on weather I should run 4 or 6 and which ones I should run. I'm going to be using a Zapco 750.2 If I run it in stereo it will put out 375X2 @ 2ohms. So, if I use four 8's (single voice coil4ohm) and wire two in parallel to each channel I'll get the full output of the amp at a safe load. However, if I run six dual voice coil and each channel will see a 2.66 ohm load which will mean the amp will be puttin out less power and each speaker will be seeing less power. Would it be better to run four 8's @ a 2 ohm load (more power) or six 8's @ 2.66 ohms (less power)?
I would appreciate any advise based on this set up and would greatly appreciate a suggestion on a 8" sub that would work well in this set up. In addition, how can I expect it to sound comparred to my 2005 with two JL10W3's and a JL500.1
Once again my plan it for the subs to sound better than the 05' and run them with the Zapco 750.2
Thanks for the help!
