Subs?

When looking for a SQ/SPL sub, is there specs to look at that determine one sub better than the other? Or are they like componets and based on personal prefrence and what sounds good to you? My reasoning behind this question is i have no clue what sub to get now.

usually low fs, high qts = SQ Sub and vise versa

Can you have the best of both worlds or do you have to choose sq/spl? I really would like loud banging spl for rock and hip-hop and when i play Latin or R&B i dont want rattling, just low tight bass.
