Subs in a '05 Dodge Ram Quad Cab

I just completed and install of a JL Audio G1700 amp pushing 2 JL 10w1v2 subs mounted in a 3/4" Rhino-lined MDF box under the rear seat. Bottom line is that I am not happy with the "thump" I am getting from my subs. The input sensitivity is only about half way up, but if I turn it any higher the subs start popping like I am throwing too much power at them. I am looking for a set of subs that can better utilize the power of the G1700 and get some more thump that I am getting from the JL's.

That is the box I purchased, the specs say .55 cubic foot.

IDQ's or W3's would probably do better.

I used to have 2 12w1v2's sealed and they would make that fluttering sound when they are pushed harder than they would like (which is easy to do). They're not a very strong woofer, though they sound ok.

How much room are you giving them? Sealed? Ported?

Well, your box is a little too small. I don't think it's so small that it's causing the problem, and I don't think your amplifier is powerful enough to damage the subs either (assuming you're using everything correctly). But still, try putting some polyfill in the enclosure if it doesn't already have some.

Are you sure you aren't turning things up a little too loud for long periods of time? Maybe you're expecting a little too much from your equipment. I'm not trying to insult you here, so please don't be offended...

I don't push the subs at all for long periods of time, anytime I play tracks with hard hitting bass the subs begin the "popping" immediately. The shop that installed the subs for me put polyfil in the box after I took my truck back and wasn't pleased with the sound. I also have JL TR series components in the front doors with the tweets in the factory dash location and coaxials in the rear doors, and it seems there isn't enough low end to keep up with my mids and highs. The overall sound quality is good, but I'm just not getting the thump I want out of hip-hop/rap tracks.

dude bought the box already, he had already bought all the subs etc, they made a popping sound just like his. i talked him into shallows and they sounded great

he needs to either get a custom made box hand built or go with shallows with that box, im sorry dude, the shallows sound great, i was surprised, how much you want to spend

if i were you man the mb quarts sound great for the price, the next step up would be the re's, then lastly the best shallow for you is the

Stereo Integrity

but it costs a pretty penny

those are your 3 options if you want to keep that box and it 2 sound good and loud

if you want to stay mainstream and safe like jl

they all will run great on the 700 rms all you will need is 2 dual 2 ohm subs

The Polk MM shallow mounts aren't bad either...and they're cheap. But I don't really know if I'd consider them an upgrade over the W1's...
