Subs have a break in period?

We have covered this topic several times including s long debate between myself and aholic in one of them. Break in has nothing to do with keeping the sub from failing/damaging it's self. It will alter the way the plays as it loosens up though.
The main goal for the "break in period" is a loop whole for companies around the warranty.
I wouldn't describe it as a loophole. I think some of these companies know they have very stiff spiders that will fail in one of a few ways if there's enough input voltage before they've loosened up just a bit, and apply a warranty accordingly. Going easy on drivers for the first couple hours is always good idea. Might save you a torn spider, broken lead, noisy glue joint, etc...

Mind you, we're talking about going right for full excursion right out of the box. If you're not truly stroking the driver, you don't have much to worry about. I'm talking about getting right in that driver's shit and taking it fresh out of the box to maximum mechanical excursion to see what it's made of. Speaking from experience as an excursion junky, myself.

Good refresher though. I always find myself with a new sub, trying to do a "break in" on it. I seem to reduce the wattage and turn the bass down for a while. I actually caught myself still treating my Gcon 12 as new after use of about two months... Crack head I know..

i generally try to free-air my subs for a little. 5 mins of 60hz on low power tones seems to work pretty well. then ill free air them at a much lower frequency and see how they respond.

but thats just what i do.

Matt
