Subs burnt up

I recently got a new amplifier installed and within three hours of getting it, my subs stopped working, and when I opened my trunk, smoke was coming out. It was running below their power rating and they weren't playing any louder than usual, so what could be the cause of them breaking?

There are any number of reasons why the amp failed. It could be a bad sub, a power problem, improper gain setting or it could even be any combination of the above.

The more info you can provide, the better help you can receive. With that said...

What amp did you replace?

What amp did you install?

What subs do you have, how many of them and what impedance are they wired at?

What size and kind of power wire do you have?

What kind and size of fuses are you using?

How many batteries and what kind do you have?

What alternator are you using?

EDIT: Also...

How were the gains set on the amp?

What were they set at?

And....

What head unit do you have?

Usually when someone runs an amp "below what their subs take" is when their subs fail..

It's because the user wants more power and doesn't have it installed so the user turns the volume up to high which sends a consistently clipped signal to the subs which heats them up a lot quicker than higher power\clean signal and cooks the leads or the coil, whichever is the weak link in the design.

yeah! *turns it up* YEAH FUCK YEAH BRO!.......*turns it up more*.......Oh shit! Damn son this bitch HITS!!........*turns it up more*.......MAN! THIS MOTHERFU......."BZZZZZ POP!" *smoke everywhere, turns it down*.......oh....oh shit dude......wtf happened.......

I switched amps from a lanzar 800 watt amplifier that was under powering my subs significantly- (really only about 70 watts rms) to a hifonics brx1600.1d. The new amplifier was putting out about 900 watts total to each sub (jl w3). It says that they can handle 300-500 watts rms a piece, so I don't really think that I was overpowering them. One thing that I noticed is that when I turned them on after getting them installed by my local shop was that it didn't really sound any louder. Was something wrong with the setup because I would think that switching from a junk amp with 70 watts power output to a bigger, better amp would make them get a lot louder.

Oh, you burned up the subs. Very simply you ran them beyond their limits. Woofers don't smoke when run within their intended limits.

yo, answer ALL of bbeljefe's questions if you want Real help instead of these guys ripping on you.

Subs can handle that power but if your electrical system isnt up to par, things will burn, simple as that. Why you ask? Voltage drops causes amps to clip.

Well the subs are done, so does anyone have any suggestions of what I should replace them with? I have a ported box with 1.22 cubic feet per sub, and a mono amp running 1200 watts rms x1 channel.

Suggest you do the big 3 first and upgrade to agm batts.Get your electric strong.

a new brain.

answer every question bbeljefe asked.

It seems as you think that max gain is max power, which is why you mentioned that 1200 mono amp, which also seems to be the third amp in this equation on top of your hifonics 1600 and lanzar 800 watt amps. You seem to think if you use a less powerful amp you will have no problems. This is NOT true.

If you really want help, answer the questions asked.
