Sub with no box?

I have a subin the rear of my car, but it is mounted with no box just free air. Do I have to buy a specific sub that will play w/o a box? Or will they all play w/o a box.

each brand usually have a specific model that is suggested for free air usage. EX: Kicker suggest the Comp series for free air
