Sub thump

It is strange. My sub has a thump, like a "turn-on thump," but I know it is not. I have one 5 ch amp and all speakers, including my sub, is connected to it. The thump inconsistant. At high vol. the thump is very loud, as if someone just slamed the trunk hard. At low vol. the thump still can be heard. Could it be my gain setting is to high, or mabe a ground loop problem, or something else?
