Sub stage is not exactly what I expected.

I just installed an IA LI 15" in a 2cf sealed enclosure powered by a Diamond audio D3 1000.1 @1ohm.

I used the voltage method for setting my gain and put it at exactly 24.5v on a 60hz 0db test tone with the volume turned to the systems effective max level.

Now it can get pretty loud when turned up and playing a bass heavy song, however at low levels it really only sounds like I have some nice low range components running the lows. It is also like this on non-bass heavy songs.

Could a Crappy head unit be behind this? I'm using a rather old and rather crappy HU...

Or could wire be an issue, I'm only using 14g to run from the amp to the sub.

Don't set the gain with a 0 dB test tone. This is why the bass *****. Try it with a -5 dB test tone.

The head unit isn't the problem, nor is the wire size a bottleneck. You have the gain set too low. Test tones are a lot more stressful on an amplifier than music, and music is constantly changing.
