Sub Enclosures

I just bought two 15" Pioneer Subwoofers (TS-W384C). I have an enclosure with six ported holes in the back. I read that the speakers were designed for small enclosures and ported boxes. I have a couple of questions. No. 1, I own a '99 cavalier, would it be better for me to point the speakers toward my backseat or toward the back of the car? Also, if I plug the holes will I get louder bass? I noticed that my Pioneer 10" subwoofers produced deeper bass than what I have now...however my 10" speakers were pointed toward the back of my car. I have a Rockford Fosgate 200s amplifier. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i'd say have them facing the trunk, especially if your seats dont fold down, lol...

and if you covered the holes up, i dont think it woul;d get quieter, cuz this way there's more air pressure coming out from the holes

as a matter of fact my seats do fold down. however...i have noticed that it doesn't rock my car like my 10" did. is this due to me having my subs pointed toward the back seat? is it b/c of my box? or is it the speaker that i have?

well duh turn them backwards man. they hit the trunk and the frequency comes back off it better. that's why SUV's and hatchback's hit so hard and hard as hell to beat at comps is all that open air. point them towards the back and see what it does, it could also be that the 15"s require more RMS power so they want more power and why not get another 200s amp and run each with 200 watts of power?? i don't know the specs on your subs though so i am just guessing here.

keep it thumpin,

adam

bumpin: after some careful consideration you're probably correct in that i need more RMS power to each speaker. i'm running the 200s bridged so the entire thing is getting about 200 watts give or take (haha more take right?). it's not hitting near as hard as my 10"s were...is this b/c i don't have a powerful enough amp? or is it my box?

khi: what is it that you mean by checking my wiring?

thanx guys for your help.

PAUL

Ok,

Your 10" is going to hit harder because its playing at near max power SO get another amp if you can and run each 15" off of its own amp. Dont plug the ports as they will make it louder. Face the 15's towards the BACK of your car and make sure you push them as close to the backseats as you can. That way they have more air/room in front of them.

He means make sure all your wires are hooked up right. Like your power wire should not run along side your RCA's they should be on opposite sides of the car. All your connections should be very secure and even have electrical tape giving them extra security.. stuff like that.

I'm having sort of a major problem...well, a concern rather. my 15" speakers are not performing worth crap. is this b/c my amp is not strong enough? the nominal output for my speakers is 350 Watts...my amp puts out roughly 200 watts...is it that big of a difference between 10" and 15"?

if it's the same amp that was pushing your 10", it is most likely your box. If you stick a 15" in a small ported box, or in one that is tuned too high (6 vents??) it won't sound good at all. If you had a lot of vent area (which I can imagine that you have a lot with 6 vents) then they will have to be pretty dang long to get a low enough tuning freqency, unless your box is gigantic.

15s generally sound not good or loud in too small of a ported box. They'll get loud but only at high frequencies which doesn't really sound that great for music. Check the specs of your subwoofer. If you post the thiele small parameters of the subs that you have, i can run them in a program real quick and tell you what would be a good set up for sound quality or spl or a little of both.

I just ran the thiele small parameters in winISD beta, a box designing program.

A box that is 5cubic feet for each subwoofer, with a singe port 6" in diameter that is 8 inches long will give deep and loud bass.

If the box is 5cubic feet total for both subwoofers, loud and deep bass will be achieved if you had a single 6" in diameter port that is 16" in length.

does your enclosure look like this?
