Sub Enclosure Shape

Im building a system for my 97 grand prix and I want to put a sub in the back seat where the console folds down and exposes the trunk area. My first question is does the shape of an enclosure affect sound. The reason I ask is because the opening is 12.5 wide by 13.5 tall which means the box is going to be more rectangle shaped with the sub mounted on the 12.5 by 13.5 side......Also, does it matter where the port is? Would it sound like crap coming out the back of the box (opposite of the sub)?All advice much appreciated
