Sub Depth?

How much space should there be between the rear end of the sub and the back of the enclosure? I thought that the only spec that mattered was the total volume. I am mounting an eclipse SW7200 12" Sub. My friends tell me I need 5-10 inches of space between the sub's rear end and the box, I currently only have 2 inches of space? Are my friends right?

If you need between 5" & 10" between your sub and the box then no one would be able to put a sub under the rear seats of their trucks...so what do you think the answer to that is?

as little as an inch is fine in most cases
