I'm installing a system in my suburban. right now i have 2 Boston g2 15's in a sealed prefab box. 2 cubes per sub. I plan on building a ported box for the subs. I installed some super cheap renegade components to give me some tunes while i do the building. I threw the components, subs and amp in this weekend for something to listen to and i notice a huge midbass gap between the subs and the components. i will be treating the doors and i know that will make a big difference. and i know I'm running crap component speakers now also. right now all my panels are off. interior is gutted etc so it's going to be hard to get much sq in its current state. I just want make sure i plan the build appropriately. I will be making custom panels for the doors. other then treating the doors and getting some quality component speakers, what else can i do to have a strong midbass. i thought about a center console with a small sub or 2, but have heard i could have cancellation issues. i could do something extra in the doors. I'm open to all ideas. just want a great sql system in the end.

Strong midbass isn't easy to achieve. There are few "midbass" drivers out there too. Jl zr800 is one. The key is to seal the doors as best you can or run one (or two) in a sealed enclosure in the center console. From what I've read, you need to cross them between 90hz to 500, then run the mids up from that point.

i have everything running on a jbl gto 5ez. what would it take to run active, so i can control tweeters with 2 channels, mids with 2 channels and then have a little more control of each? that will also open options on speakers a little more. maybe I can get more midbass without the tweeters getting to loud that route. i have never done an active setup

A dsp would be the best way. Check out the dqdx.

A lot of the problems of getting strong midbass in a car is the acoustics of the environment. Road noise covers some of the same frequencies in which the real detail lies in the lower frequencies of music. Bass and midbass are more about a tactile sensation, with the midrange bringing the real texture and tonal detail out of bass guitar, drums, and the like. So how do we reduce road noise? The treatments get lumped under the term "sound deadening", but you have to go beyond laying foil-backed mat. Traditional sound deadener does very little to block road noise, it does not stop rattles, and it does nothing to absorb sound.

CLD, CCF, MLV, vibration damping, decoupling, barrier layer, these are some of the buzz words of a highly effective system of sound deadening. I strongly recommend you read up at Sound Deadener Showdown.com. Once you understand the basics we can help you source the heavier and bulkier products at a good price.

Changing your setup to active from passive is not guaranteed to get you more midbass. Depending on how you do it, you can end up with a lot more tuning control, but you may need to sacrifice bass loudness to get well balanced sound.
