Strange computer problem..

For some odd reason, Ares/Windows Media Player/anything else I use to play video files only plays part of the file for some reason. For example, I tried opening a video file that's 8:36 long but Media Player only plays 1:12 of it. When it does this, the video cuts off at certain points but the sound continues. If I try to skip through using the time bar at the bottom, it will skip like 2 minutes ahead rather then the 30 seconds it should since it's read as being 1:12 long. The video might be incomplete, but for a default answer, try VLC Media Player.

I know that the video is complete because it has played all the way through with no problems before.

video codecs on computer have been damaged? try diff video formats watching em anyways
