Stereo won't retain memory, help?

I'm not real wonderful at hooking up fancy car stereos and such, but I can manage to put in your basic wal-mart sony explode haha. Anyways, I have put a few units in and never had this problem. It seems that whenever I leave the truck (92' ford ranger) sit for about 2 minutes..the cd player it loses its memory. Everything works great in the accs. and ignition position. I figured it might not be getting a constant power supply, but the voltmeter seems to think it is. I don't know much about grounds but i have heard they are pretty important so I checked it and I'm pretty sure its alright also. However, I disconnected the ground wire and turned the ignition to accs. and the unit powered up (somehow that seems a lil strange //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif ....also...if I turn the truck completely off for about 30 seconds and back on again, the memory is still there. I dunno whats going on..im kinda stuck, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It turned on because the unit was grounding out somewhere in the back. The solution is fairly simple, run a new power wire from the battery terminal. Should be like cake. Buy a cheap $2 inline fuse from walmart or something, then run it through the firewall (small wire will be easy to find a hole for) and plug it in.

I tired running the power straight from the battery, but it made no differance, it still wont hold its memory. Anyways, I decided maybe it was the unit itself, so I grabed a friends out of his car...but alas, it just does the samething. The only thing I havent replaced is the connector, but i dont think its got a problem because I cut a small hole in the top of the unit and held the voltmeter leads on the prongs inside the unit and it showed it getting power. I have no idea why its not working.

r u sure u dont have the batt and the acc mixed up? red and yellow cables?

other than that i have no idea. but try switching those cables and see what happens.

it has to be ur accessory and power wires in the back of ur head unit, take it out and check the wires crimped together and see if the power is to power and acc. is to acc.
