Starting from scratch, need opinions

I am helping a guy get his first system. I havent had much experience with the higher end stuff, so need some input. Budget is around $500, going into a 92 Ford Ranger single cab, SQL setup, and listens to rap, rock, and country. I was thinking about a single 12, component set, and multi channel amp, but not sure what is out there and is decent. Any info on size, setup, or brands is appreciated. Thanks.
