SQ Car Questions

The goal for my car is to be able to get loud on bass songs, but be able to tone it back and have exceptional definition and staging on more acoustically interesting songs.

Right now my songs sound kind of muddy and I know that I am missing alot of lower midrange notes. I can hear the little bit of music down in there but its so attenuated that have to really focus.

Right now I've got a Pioneer DEH-P7800MP as my head unit.

I'll be upgrading my sub to a 12 Q @ 1ohm.

I'll be sound deadening the doors and trunk, at least, with SS Spectrum.

I'm looking at a several nice sets of comps for the front and was just thinking about getting a set of coaxils or maybe even just a midbass driver for rear fill. Suggestions?

Right now my cutouts are for 4x6's so I'll have to do some fabrication, but am willing to do that. I have about 4-5 inches of mounting depth in my doors, which is where I want to stick the speakers.

How important is the amp powering the components. What effects will a poorer quality amp have? Suggestions on good brands are welcome.

Just make intelligent suggestions about anything at all.

First of all...if you are just planning on doing a 2-way setup I would recommend getting a 6 1/2" driver because no 4x6 or 4" is going to be able to produce any type of midbass or be able to get loud without large amounts of distortion. As for the rear, if you just want something back there put a set of coaxials. Definately don't just put a midbass back there because you want your sound to come from in front of you, not behind you. Deadening the doors is a great idea.

Any reputable quality amp will be fine. Once you get up to a certain level of quality the sound shouldn't change.

heres the deal, go on DIYMOBILEAUDIO.COM and read.

then make sure you have around 50 more watts for each speaker than is needed so you can get them to full potential without clipping or distorting the signal, or even running the amp too hard.

then, install your speakers. i recommend like above, at least a 6.5 and an 8 if possible. get yourself an active crossover network and an EQ. get some tweeters that can mate with a midbass\midrange - pay attention to the FR graphs to see where they start to breakup and roll off, and READ about them. SEARCH the interwebs about them. dont just buy something because some random person said they liked them. buy something because lots of people who owned them, made detailed reviews containing lots of information and pictures.

amps are not as important as the right install. only making sure you have enough wattage for your speakers (give yourself 50w of headroom), install them right (sound deaden), lastly cross them over and eq them correctly and you should be very happy.

most importantly - do your research.
