SQ between these boxes....

Ok, last night, my friend and i had an argument over SQ. He says his XXX ported to 30 hz sounds better than my Type R's sealed. I have always heard and believed that sealed sounds better than ported. His argument was that a box tuned really low like his sounds just as good as an ideal sealed box. Any input on SQ box applications is wanted

GEEZ, give that up, i sided with PSI even though my friend still insists its a prototype....idk wtf he on. But yes, the argument was with that kid if you care to know

What makes u think that sealed always sounds better than ported? how many setups have u run ported and sealed to come to that conclusion? My magnum sounds better to me ported than it did sealed, and it lost no accuracy or tightness in response..

I felt my old eclipse sub sounded much better in a sealed enclosure then a ported.

This is 100% subjective.

Always a tough question because to some SQ="what sounds better"..but in Reality SQ means a "more accurate and cleaner reproduction of the music your playing".

So Ported and Tuned correctly can have some great SQ..but trying to push that concept of "YOU CAN GET AMAZING SQ WITH PORTED OVER SEALED" is a tough sell.

I say the ported guys need to stick to the Fact they can get LOUDER than sealed..But don't push the theory that you can still reign supreme in SQ at the same time..I am just not buying that yet.

And I still stick to the Fact that almost all SQ sub manufacturers with million dollar testing equipment and Research&development labratories ALL reccomend SEALED ENCLOSURES..

It is Subjective though

u can always tune a ported box at low 20th, and this is SQ. and it depends actually , in what SQ is it to u, bass quality , can differ from one's ear to another, as someone said above, u can keep arguin like this forever. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

mmm well the best thing to do , enter a SQ comp, and c who will get more points //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/up2something.gif.dd110ecf3ae4b76050d87598f2f8de7c.gif

i hope my setup has good sq, thats why i tuned to 28hz, im a squeer freak!!!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

Some of you guys need to look up what a speaker's EBP means. Sealed isn't always better SQ.

Way too many generalizations here, on both sides of the debate. Too many factors are involved to do this: driver used, vehicle used and its freq characteristics, enclsoure specifics, etc.

edit: Norcalracer, you said once this friend's XXX has a special basket and was wild looking. I took that to mean you'd seen it. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wow.gif.23d729408e9177caa2a0ed6a2ba6588e.gif

I don't think SEALED IS "ALWAYS" BETTER FOR SQ....but I think too many try to drop science and Technical tuning specs trying to confuse and dance around the issue of Sealed simplicity being a better alternative for SQ than Tweaking a Ported Box for days trying to reach the same result.

Tweak a ported box for days? Huh?

Can a sealed enclosure's output not be changed by running different volumes? A sealed box can be 'tweaked' too, and not every volume would give the results you are wanting.

NO...NO...NO..what I am saying is that there is always a big debate about SQ with ported boxes and sealed and the Ported guys usually start explaining that "Tuning this or adjusting that" can get you the same SQ as Sealed..Obviously you can tweak sealed boxes from air space to Upfire/downfire configs etc...

I just mean there always seem to be very winded explanations as to how SQ "COULD" be attained with a ported enclosure. it just always seems like Ported guys claim loud but get upset and defensive when they cannot claim SQ and explain VERY complex ways they "CAN" get it..I was saying that for the "common" consumer...just get a Sealed Box!!!

You don't debate politics

You don't debate religion

And you sure as hell don't get into a debate with a guy with a Ported box about not getting good SQ..it always leads to issues.LOL!!!!

Tuning the ported enclosure low (like high 20's) is VERY complex?

Again, look what EBP means for a subwoofer. Some driver's simply sound 'better' in ported enclsoures rather than sealed, by design.

And yes, some drivers (like XBL^2 enabled drivers) can attain very high SQ levels in a ported enclsoure. Id be willing to bet sitting in a car with a XBL^2 driver in its proper enclsoure, most people wouldn't be able to tell its ported, based on their pre-conceived notions of what a ported sub sounds like. Have you heard a Brahma or XXX in a low tuned box yet?

I will give you that..and I will ADMIT..I have never really heard an SQ set up using a ported box so I sure as hell cannot attest to what they can do..I just have heard alot of PORTED BOXES in loud systems with SQ not being a concern...So granted I am not as well versed as some on this..I just go with the SEAlED set up..even when I am interested in SPL...so there is Bias but I admit I have little first hand experience with those using Ported in an SQ style

This may seem off topic but in my home stereo set up THE BASS IS AMAZING!!!!!.Very good SQ..and sure enough my Sub box is a single ported Infinity
