SPL #'s on JL w7's

Ok i installed the w7's in a box I whipped up for them & not impressed at all. I am not going to go with the 4 of them, my 2 w7's out performed them by far. I am just going to sell them on craigslist or something, because I think shipping will be a little steep.

Well, I have heard a W7 set up, it wasn't terrible, definitely loud and sounded ok, but the idiot running it had no clue what he was doing so he was distorting the hell out of it, clipping the amp, using bass boost and all that dumb stuff. My 2 Stereo Integrity BM 12s were around 10 dB louder on the meter and sounded much better, but again, the W7 was not nearly optimal.

I think there are definitely subs that sound better than the W7 and can match it in linear stroke, I haven't ever owned any of them though but the old RE XXX should beat it, the new XXX should, the LMS drivers should. The Acoustic Elegance AV line should put up quite a fight for much less as well.

For pure SQ the W6 is better, I would say the Mag V4 is better, probably some ID subs too, but I have never heard ID.

In closing, the W7 definitely combines some great qualities, and if you get it for a decent price, there is 0 wrong with it, and even the other subs that match it can be similar in cost ie. the XXX and the LMS.

Ya I like those LMS's they are sexy I would not mind doing 4 of those, but you can never find anyone selling those. Also if you do it is for an outrageous price.

'Beat it' how exactly? The W7 falls somewhere in the middle of those drivers when it comes to displacement potential. It has (slightly) more potential than does the old XXX and any LMS driver Ive seen, but less than the new XXX as it is still the king of displacement potential (besides drivers like Parthenon).
Can anyone tell me how many years now the W7 has been the subwoofer that virtually every other sub manufacturer wants to contest, and 'beat'? Its due some respect by now.

A close friend of mine has 2 13" W7s on a Rockford T3000 in a 2004 Yukon Denali. Ported 6ft3 @ 33hz and it pulled a 148.1 @ 40hz.

This setup moves a TON of air though, numbers dont really describe how loud it is though.

Numbers would definitely give us an idea how loud it is. If you think it has more potential in it than that score indicates due to air movement, tell him to try a lower freq burp.

Im thinking about 8 years now.. Either way, I agree with this statement..

this made no sense to me.... what exactly are you trying to say???

The LMS drivers I have seen all have ~38mm or so Xmax, that is more displacement than a W7. Like you said, the old XXX is pretty much dead on to the XXX. The only thing is I believe the XXX and LMS may have lower distortion on something like a Klippel test, however at the distortion levels we are talking about it does become negligible.

But overall, yes, I 100% agree with you, the W7 is an amazing driver and is one of the holy grails of sub design, high excursion, low distortion and also very well know. If I had the money it is possible I would run a W7, but I am far from having enough money to run one.
