SPL #'s on JL w7's

news to me... funny... you can get a 15" BTL fully loaded for 350 as well... only that BTL didnt lose OVER 1/2 its value....or better yet, an 18" AQHDC3 WITH alum coils for about that much NEW!
dude, a good sub, has/keeps value...and if you say "noooo, your wronggg" in what aspect would that comment be in-correct

it is a good car comparison... its like charging 200K for a ferrari, and putting a v6, 300HP engine in it... yea its still kinda fast, can beat other mainstream cars, but for what you pay, you're getting F-ed
HAHAHAHA

Funny

Since I flipped that $350 13W7 on craigslist for $800 in 4 days

i believe in the thread he asked what would be louder for spl so it was kinda relevant to post what i did.
i understand that, but this topic rapidly switched to a jl bashing thread. it's sad, people can't even talk about jl anymore w/out people saying "oh, they're overpriced garbage". once again, if you don't look at the price, you guys would have nothing to talk about.

nobody talks shit because AQ is cheap, because you could say something like " you get what you pay for". you can't always judge something on how much it costs/doesn't cost.

oh i'll talk good about JL, just not the W7... I love their comps personally.. priced about the same as boston

no, im gonna have to disagree. the w7 has it beat for sq, and spl. no contest there. i mean, anything can have sq at 120db....but for a decently loud sub, there really is no question there

ok thanks for all the input so far. Sorry if this thread ruffled anyones feathers or got someone panties in a wad. I just came across a **** good deal on some w7's & was asking if they would get louder than my type r's. I also have been looking into the audioque hdc3 12's aswell. I want a solid setup to compete in street c for this year.

street C? that is the class i ran the past 2 years //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

i actually started with 2 15'' R's, then 4 12'' R's, then 4 12'' HDC3's. the only reason i switched to audioque was because on full power burps the R's would burn (the coils). unless you dont have this problem id recommend keeping the R's. when i made the switch i was actually kind of unhappy. the hdc3's are not louder. with more power they are, but i didnt have the power for this. you need to spend 3k+ on amps in order to make the hdc3's louder than R's in my opinion for st c setups. weight is another big thing. i was always swapping out boxes for new ones (testing of course). type R's are so much lighter than HDC3's. was this box fun to put in? (keep in mind there was also about 150 pounds of concrete in the box to). was it even fun to put the subs in outside the vehicle? nope //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

type R's under ~6k will be louder. stick with the R's and work on the boxes first //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif amps, wire, and good batteries. for a decent setup you will want at least 7k rms rated in amplifier power. and at least 6 runs of 0 gauge.

the type R's box volume i had down to .1 cubes. with my power and port arrangement they liked 1.25 cubes a piece. and the box shown above i tested .7 dbs louder than the standard 4 12's up, 3 4'' aeros back, box on the right type of setup (how a lot of suv 4 12 owners run)

Lets put this to rest:

-The W7 will sound better and probably be louder than the type R's given the proper enclosure and power

-Yes W7's have a high retail price, ....congrats.... you can read price tags..... you can get a xcelent shape 13w7 used arnd $300-$350... thats more realistic and I believe it is worth that kind of price

-I have had a 13w7 in 3.5cuft tuned to 30hz.... 143.xx termlab legal on a Xenon 1200.1 pretty loud and sounded GREAT

-had 2 10W7's in 2cuft sealed on the xenon 1200.1... sounded AWESOME... never metered but guessing low 140's

-Everything was in a 2002 Celica hatch: also had 04xxx 15" 07xxx 12" 07 mx12" 4-12" REHC's (db drag world finalist s3-4) 6 se10"s 4 Oz Me 12"s 2 ID max 12"s... ++++ many more

I can say that the combo of loud and SQ of the W7 is REALLLLLLLY hard to beat... I've had louder...I've had sounded better but NEVER and I mean NEVER louder and sounded better at the same time!

The fact that the W7 is still relevant after all these years just tells you how solid the design was/is. The W7 has been the 'top dog' subwoofer since before many of you were even into car audio (or could drive). So you can piss and moan about its unique sound, its power handling or its price tag all you want, that does not change the fact that almost everyone has been trying to play catch-up to JL in the SQL 'supersub' scene for years now.

That is not to say I think they are worth the price. And quoting used prices in order to make the sub's price seem more palatable is pretty lousy reasoning.

I've heard 4 15" Type R's off 2 Crunch gp3000's and 4 13" W7's off 4 JL 1000.1's both ported I'm not sure what numbers but the Type R's were def. louder but didn't sound as good as the W7's. Although the Type R's were tuned higher for better scores. You also have to consider the Type R's had more cone area higher more power and a higher tune. I'd say with more power and a higher tune the W7's would shit all over the Type R's just my 2 cents. I agree with audioholic tho its def. Been the woofer to beat since it came out a lot of companys base their woofers or marketing towards beatin the W7. You also gotta take power into consideration like my Type R off 800 watts was louder than my RE MT off the same power but with 2500 watts the MT shitted all over it just a matter of gettin a woofer that's designed to get loud with the power you have available.
