Spinning out in an auto

what are you talkin about? the dude was right. its not even "many times" like he said, its more like "just about all the time" and as far as i know it IS all the time. reverse has a higher gear ratio than 1st...
Thank you for clarifying that for me... tighter may have not been the correct word but im sure if they think hard enough they will understand my point.

i went through a automatic ***** class, ill be ****ed if we didnt go over sun gears, gear ratios, valve bodies etc etc until our ears bled.

No, reverse generally is 1st gear. When you select reverse it slips another cog inbetween the two gears which makes it spin the opposite way.

cog? when you select reverse the planetary gear set changes to spin your output in reverse...

your ratio depends on the different combonations of the carrier, sun, and ring gear and in most cases is similar to first gear...but isnt.

edit: yes you are right (didnt know you were talkin about manual trannys which use an idler gear), but reverse is usually a higher gear ratio than 1st...just cause it uses the same gear doenst mean its the same ratio

double edit: happened to find a 2004 corvette z06 gear ratio on wikipediathat i can use as an example.

Gear Ratio

1st gear 2.97:1

2nd gear 2.07:1

3rd gear 1.43:1

4th gear 1.00:1

5th gear 0.84:1

6th gear 0.56:1

reverse 3.28:1
