speakers making crackling with new head unit

Previously I had a Clarion head unit which I have replaced with a Kenwood head unit. The problem is after installing it, the left and right speaker crackles when the volume is turned up. The left speaker is worse, however when the balance is shifted to the right speaker (the left speaker is off), the speakers crackling completely stops even if the volume is turned up quite loud. This issue is the same across cd player, and radio.

What could be causing these issues?

If Im understanding you correctly about the difference when the balance is adjusted, that would imply the problem is in the deck. But I still think the most likely problem is the speakers, since a crackling noise is a very common symptom of a failed midrange driver. Eliminate one of the two variables and see if the problem goes away (ie: hook the new deck up to diff speakers).

I resolved the problem. It was due to someone else's wiring job probably causing a short. The wire was taped and golng to the rear speaker output from the same wire. So I had connected + - from a single wire. Go figure. So I think the thing to learn from this even though it seems okay, some people seem to wire things very bizzarely.
