I have a 1999 Ford Explorer.

I just had the following installed:

Alpine CD player

4 Infinity 5 x 7 speakers (1 in each door)

Alpine 4 channel 75 watt amp

It sounds much improved from the factory system, but

at louder volumes any songs with a lot of bass really

distort the speakers. I listen to a lot of rap and hip-hop

music and it just sounds like **** when it's turned up.

How can I get rid of this distortion?

Is it that the 5 x 7's just can't handle that much bass?

Would new speakers make a difference?

I just want the low end to sound tight, but I am trying to avoid

adding any sub woofers.

5x7's won't be capable of filling the low end of the spectrum, chances are you are overdriving them and that is where you are having the major problem...

I'd pass the 5x7's over higher, and get a smaller subwoofer to compensate for your missing lower end. If you don't want to do that, a true component set could help fill in the gap, but won't completely eliminate it.

Cars are loud environments. Have you tried the speaker in the car in a garage plugged into an outlet? Start isolating variables.

If not the kick panel, then I'd go dash Generally the farther away the better
