Question Regarding Speaker Replacement

I'm in the process of upgrading the system in my 2008 Toyota Tundra. Currently it has a POS JVC head unit and stock speakers. I'm replacing the head unit, adding an amp, and adding a sub. My question relates to the stock speakers. It has some sort of speaker on the front dash (L&R sides ). It has 6x9s in the front doors and 6-3/4s in the rear doors. My plan is to replace the dash speakers with some decent tweeters and replace the rear speakers with some decent 2-ways. It's the front I have an issue with. Do I replace these with 2-ways or with decent mids? Suggestions? Ideas?

Depends on budget

If it were mine, I'd use a 3.5" coaxial or 2.5-3.5 widebander in the dash. Best would be a midrange in the dash and some tweeters mounted somewhere

I'd consider a quality 6x9, 8", or 6.5 in the front door, and a 6.5-8" for th rear door depending on what will fit with/without carving.

Get a dsp amp, or dsp and enough amp channels to crossover and tune everything

Thanks for the response. Budget doesn't allow for the DSP. In regards to the front door speakers, are these midrange/wideband speakers or two-ways?

If you are set on mounting something in the dash, would use a 6.5 component set. Mids in the doors and tweeters in the dash. No need to make it complicated.
If you can find 6x9 components it would make doors easier.

Great, thanks for the info.

What amp and headunit?
What budget for the front doors? rear doors? Otherwise all recommendations are BS.

DSP's are <$300 with a few in the <$200 range. Marts has one on amazon for $160. And the NVS EQ is on sale for $99 on amazon, which looks like a clone to the Stetson EQ.

There is nothing complicated with a dsp or eq, and 3 way that sounds well, when compared to pathetic sounding non-eq'd 2-way's that make you cringe.

IMHO, without midranges, you'll have a hole in your front sound stage. You'll expect the door to produce that and it'll be beaming or blocked by your leg. Most tweeters don't play low enough, and is why many Toyota use the 2.75-3.5" dash speakers. For $230, Amazon/ebay have the Kenwood xp6903c. If you're budget is higher, infinity/JBL have component 2-way 6x9's available and once you get sick of the loss of good midrange, you can flip the switch and add their midrange. Kicker makes a 3-way 6x9 setup too.

For rear fill, NVX has their xsp65kit for $140 and ebay has the kenwood XR1800p for $200. I don't care for coaxials since they always sound pathetic when compared to their equivalent sibling component equivalent. But, cheaper 6.5-7" coaxials can be had for the rear door for simplicity and budget, like vtek62, gto629, nvx vsp or xsp, or meso 6.5 for $100.

Just power the passive crossovers by your 4 door(and dash)channels. And, if you add a sub, you can cut the bass out of those 4 channels as most tolerable amps have a crossover. No point in overly stressing door midwoofers if/when you get a sub running. Without eq or dsp, you're limited to whatever you headunit offers for bassmidrangetreble tuning, which might be enough.

If you want to spend a little more research time, you can do well with the speaker choices from CDTaudio, which usually has monthly sales. They have excellent 6.5-7" and 6x9 speakers for your doors. They have widebanders and coaxials for the dash too.

Thanks, I appreciate the info and will take it into consideration. Yes, I have a limited budget. Retired, so not an unlimited amount of funds. I just want better sounding system than what I have. I know the weakest point are my speakers and those will be my focus, eventually. Right now I'll be installing an amp that was for another project, that has gone by the wayside, and a sub that's on its way. Nothing high end. I have set to set priorities (wife). 😁
