Speaker Help!!!

Hey,

I just bought a mk3 VW Golf GTI. It has a Pioneer MVH-P7300 head unit with stock speakers. Research says that the head unit is pretty good, but I want some good speakers to go with it. As of right now, it has 6.5 inch speakers with 1 inch highs (tweeters?). Volkswagen had some interesting shapes, so my thought is to go to a two or three way speaker and just disconnect the highs (they are in the dash and separate from the 6.5 in the rear).

So my question is which speakers would be good for this application. I do not plan on putting an amp in, but I want to get it as loud as I can. At the local car audio shop, I was told that Alpine 60R's are good, but then I reviewed them on line and it says that they can be a little blurred (or something like that).

Obviously, i'm not a car stereo guy...I just want some speakers that will sound good! Looking to stay in the $100/pair or less range...

So what would you suggest...oh and I love to listen to loud music!!!

Thanks,

rob

I got sneezed on here for my choice of all Alpine R series speakers here, and those are some of Alpine's best speakers. I did NOT get sneezed on here when I ordered two PHD 5.1 5.25: AT speakers with separate tweeters, for $640 a pair.

Good speakers are gonna cost you. Get the best you can afford, you will not regret it.

You got laughed at with PHD. And here is why. For your reading pleasure. It's meadioure. Sells for half the price in Europe. All the the US PHD guys have jumped ship. Hertz, Rainbow, Morel, Massive Audio, JBL, Helix Component Comparison - Car Audio | DiyMobileAudio.com | Car Stereo Forum
they dont sound bad honestly, Just not worth the price at all the FB 6.1 pro mids actually got sort of loud with some clarity. However their build quality is garbage. Falls apart at the seams. Same with JBL speakers. Sh*t terminals and sh*t tinsel leads

I'm sure they sound good. But you know the types that buy into the hype, the same ones that swap speakers every week because they are never happy.
my soundqubed pro audios sounded a tad better than the phd mids to be honest. Smoother response while maintaining higher output. PHD got a bit peaky at louder levels.

NEW Polk Audio db651 6.5" Marine/Car/Boat/Water Speakers 360 Watts Pair 6-1/2" 47192112784 | eBay

These really sound pretty nice for Stock speaker replacements..Even later with a dedicated amp they sound pretty nice for the price

Thanks for all the help y'all...and more than that...thanks for making me see how much I don't know about car stereos!!!

So allow me to ask another question...if you had to suggest a speaker to someone who only wanted to spend $100 per pair, what would you recommend? Two ways...

Around $100...

You asked that question in the original post, but john kuthe posted and derailed your thread.. He does that pretty regularly...I'm pretty sure he views almost every post as an opportunity to brag about one thing or another...but back on topic.

It's really a crap shoot what set would be best for you. Ideally you could spend a bit more to at least find a cheap used amp and treat your doors, but I understand wanting to stick with a budget.

I would suggest looking at NVX VSP65KIT 6.5" V-Series Component Speakers System They come in at 102.00 right now with the code and NVX makes solid budget products. I've not used them since at that budget I would save a bit more for the JBL P660c, but they do get favorable reviews and if I had to stick with ~ $100 I would give them a go.....Also if you're dead stuck on spending exactly a 100 or less I'll float you the 2 dollars :p

Another option is Rockford Fosgate PRIME R165-S 6.5" Component Car Speakers I used these for my little sister's first car. They...worked. The remaining 45 bucks can go a ways to buying a decent used amp locally (if your patient or lucky) and if you have any left you can get creative at the hardware store to do some minimal treatment to your doors which should give you more gains than buying a more expensive set off the bat.

As a disclaimer front stage is a difficult area to strongly suggest one thing or another. There's a lot going on that could really degrade the sound of whichever speaker you throw in. Even a $640 pair of speakers can sound like crap if the install is lacking, but I can say that I would/have personally spend money on either of those options. Just know your mileage may vary. Good luck! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I was only slightly bragging about "my" PHD speakers. I don't even have them yet, and am HOPING PHD will make me a pair before their discontinue the 5.25" AF line. I was mostly trying to say the better a speaker you get the better the sound you will get out of it and yes while the cost of the speakers is som, etoimes a very good indication ofg the quality of csound they will produce, price is not an absolute gage of their performance. And yes mounting and enclosure treatments are YUGE!

Budgets ****!! I'm so glad I have enough excess money to be able to play with it and waste some. It's FUN!

Price is hardly ever a good indication of the sound quality a car speaker will produce. Besides OP stated a budget of ~100/pair...

Case in point about bragging in practically every post...How does stating that you have excess money contribute to addressing the OP's question?

One day he will understand. Or he never will. Either way it's a complete waste of time.
