Space between port and trunk

hey all, sorry if this is in the wrong area, i thought this would be the best place for my question.

im getting a new box for my two subs soon and i have heard that i should leave 4 inches between the port and the trunk of my car. i have only enough room to have 2-3 inches of space. would this be okay? and why do we need any space at all?

It will be ok at 2-3 inches, but more spaces gives the box air to breathe....

Normally you want to be the width of the port from the trunk wall, but many have run with less space with no issues...
