Sound quality

Heyman, I have talked to the installers at circuit city, and they said that 64kbps ATRAC3plus sounded the same as "high-bitrate mp3".

Since when have 99.9% of CC installers had a clue what they are talking about?

Obviously computers, not audio, are your "thing". So I would sincerely suggest abandoning the conversation, as you have no hope.

Haven't posted in weeks, wanted to bring up a few things.

1: See the attachment? It's a direct from CD rip of the song "Eleven Seconds of Silence" by Virgin Black. It's an outro. It is compressed in variable bitrate OGG/Vorbis between 2 and 22 KBPS. It is, for all intents and purposes, lossless. Fuzzy logic dictates this hard evidence of Vorbis being able to encode losslessly at 2 KBPS as proof of it being a greater format than Atrac3Plus could ever be. EDIT: Smart people will see several layers of irony in this. Also, let it be known that at this rate and higher the other songs don't hold a candle to the CD itself.

2: Greater than MP3 isn't saying much. The LAME encoding method is older than Atrac itself, which is almost 14 years old, and hasn't had much improvement done to it. MP3 is just a standard. EDIT: Compare Atrac to Vorbis for a challenge.

3: If you're listening to 64Kbps music and you can't tell the difference between it and a real CD, DISPITE you "superior hearing", then fuzzy logic dictates once again that the system you are listening to is not capable of producing sound quality (sonic accuracy) greater than that of the 64Kbps Atrac3Plus. THAT answers your question of whether your Sony stereo is good or not because of the specs.

First post in weeks, hope it makes some sense. Fuzzy logic FTW.

Raven, I've listened to MP3s through iPods, store-bought CDs through my Sony setup, my dad's 255W Infinity setup, and through my X-Box, which is connected to my computer through a Monster Cable LightWave 100 fiber optic digital audio cable, and ATRAC3plus through my Sony setup and a small, portable Sony Walkman CD player, and I could not tell the difference between any of them. I have even listened to MP4 files at Transcoding bitrate (250-300kbps VBR) on Nero Media Player, but still no difference. It could be that I sometimes don't pay that much attention to the music, or it could just be that I don't care. I chose ATRAC3plus at 64kbps because of how good it sounded (to me, anyway) and how small the files are. I have 190 songs on my playlist, and I can burn all of them to a CD without using more than half the space on a 700MB disk

Then I feel a little sorry for you. Not only do you have autism to contend with, but your tone deafness makes people think you're just a run of the mill retard instead.

Get off my interwebs.

Now, to end the conversation...ATRAC3plus sounds fine to me. I chose it because I didn't have $500 to spend on an iPod. I bought all of the equipment I use one piece at a time, paying no more than $200/month for them. The Sony Walkman CD player was $80 (that was around October 2005), then came the Sony speakers in my car (which I got just after Christmas 2005), which were $80/pair, then came the Sony head unit (which I got around January 2006), which was $120. I download music for $0.99 per song or up to $11.99 per album, and I usually download three or four songs every month or so. I can burn up to 350 songs on a 700MB CD-R disk at 64kbps, and since I only have 190 songs, I figured it was a good investment of resources to use an old spindle of Memorex CD-Rs I had lying around instead of paying $500 for a portable music player. Again, ATRAC3plus @ 64kbps sounds fine to me, so I think this is a much better use of resources than paying mucho dinero for an iPod. Besides, I'm not really into music and stereo systems as much as everyone else is...I only got the Sony setup because the factory stereo system in my car went bad. I didn't get an iPod because I didn't want to deal with the hassle of buying extra parts just to hook it up to my stereo system. Ever heard the saying "Keep it simple, stupid"? Short, straight, and to the point...That's the way I like things.

See, if you had said that first instead of saying sony is amazing and your a supergenius whiz kid with superhuman hearing you may not have gotten flamed so much

Tempest, I will admit that ATRAC3plus is not all that great, but it is still better than MP3, at least at lower bitrates. Sony Xplod is a good entry-level line of mobile audio equipment. Sony is also good for those who are on a very limited budget. I am glad you guys can afford to spend hundreds, if not thousands of $$$ on top-of-the-line car audio systems, but I prefer to save as much money as I can for more important things. I am going to be nice about this and say that next time, don't start flaming people for exercising their freedom of speech and voicing their opinions about a product they like. I never buy the best stuff "just because". In my opinion, "the best" is more than about quality. Its about reliability, durability, the amount of features for a given price (More features for less money is a good thing), and ease-of-use.

When you buy top-of-the-line stuff, you are not really paying for the quality or the features. You are paying more because of the brand name itself and the "reputation" of that company. Its just like cars. Mercedes and Jaguar cost $50,000 to $75,000, but you can find most of the same features in the $30,000 Kia Amanti. The reason Mercedes and Jaguar cost more is not because of all the features, its because of the brand name. I have done my research, and found that most of the costs from a product are not from making the product itself. Instead, the costs come primarily from advertising and marketing that product. That means the company has to jack their prices up to make up for that lost revenue. That is also one reason why I chose Sony. Sony does not spend as much money on advertising and marketing as most of their competitors do, so they have low overhead costs, which leads to lower prices. Most people ignore these facts and spend mucho dinero on top-of-the-line products which aren't even worth the prices people pay for those products. Its just like the food at McDonalds...A burger only costs $1.00 to make, yet McDonalds charges you $5 or more for that burger. Most companies make you pay way more than the product is worth, and they trick you into doing so by using "legitimate reasons", like massive ad campaigns for the product, paying stores mucho dinero to put the products on their shelves, and all that stuff.

My question to you guys is this: Do you really want to pay more for "the best" stuff or do you want to pay for a cheaper product that has most, if not all of the same features?

Let's try this scenario: You have two computers with exactly the same parts. One is a $400 Dell setup and the other is an $800 Sony Vaio setup. The computers are exactly the same, the only thing different is the brand name and the price. Which would you spend your money on?

Or, let's try this scenario: You are at an auto body shop getting your car modded. The parts you need amount to a total of $1,200, but labor is $75/hour and it takes 3 hours of work. A second body shop will charge you $1,000 for those same parts, and the labor rate there is $50/hour for 3 hours of work. Body shop A is a do-it-all garage like Jiffy Lube, while body shop B specializes in the work you want them to do, and body shop B employs ASE Certified technicians, while body shop A just hires off the street. Who would you go to?

That's the kind of stuff you have to think about.

every post you make is sillier than the last

and i already posted the link to the blind comparison study between several different audio codecs, and atrac3plus ranked quite differently than you insist that it does
