Sound Quality Head Unit

I was looking at a couple of different units and would like to know opinions comments comparissons or problems you have experienced with them.

I have no budget for the unit and I am strictly interested in sound quality.

Eclipse CD7100

Kenwood KDC-X991

Clarion DRZ9255

Denon any

Panasonic CQ-TX5500D

or any other models open to anything

So far I have morel supremo 6 and a zapco competition amp along with a morel ultimo 12 powered by another zapco amp

What do you want it to do besides SQ? iPod Control or no? A few Alpines that come to mind are the new CDA-9887 (which I own and love) and the older Alpine CDA-7998 (no iPod controls/dead head). Also a few of the McIntosh HUs are pretty sick, along with a the Pioneer Premier DEH-P880PRS and the DEX-1P (?) ...Can't remember if that is the model number but it has a separate outboard processor. The Clarion has gotten solid reviews. I've owned the 2 Alpines and the 880PRS I mentioned. The 7998 was my favorite of those 3. If only it had iPod controls... Me personally I would never recommend Eclipse, Alpine, Clarion or Pioneer over Denon. The only problem with Denon is you have to buy them from someone used from over seas. If there is NO budget for a head unit I would direct you at these Denon units.

Other than those 2 models I would suggest the Clarion DRZ-9255 or the Pioneer Premier P9 combo.

None of the other units you listed match these in build quality and most of those on your list don't match the sound quality.

Thanks for all of the input today I want my local shop and had the owner put a volt meter on a few units to see the preamp out put the pioneers only had a .5 volt and th alpines had 2.5volts and the eclipse had 8.1volts being the highest of all.

Kenwood Excelon X-990 or X991 has 5volt pre outs. Sound quality is outstanding. I have the X-990, and have been very happy with it.

The high volt output will only help lower alternator wine a little... if you have alternator wine... if you don't have noise to begin with...

alpine 9990, pxa-h900 combo if moneys no object.....dennon and clarions drz9255 are great choices as well, pioneer p9, mcintosh mx406 are all great.....also if you are looking for a great high-end selection pm 6spdcupe, hes in your area i think and is very, very knowledgeable in high-end headunits and gear, ad has a shop that carries most of it. heres a link i think you might find useful.

youve gone as far as investing in some excelent sq speakers, so do the sae with the headunit. Though the x991, cd7100, 880 are geat headunits, I think you can do better as far as a headunit.

These threads always amuse me. If you've bought that and have no clue of which HU to go with, you probably bought them from some shop. You likely decided that the HU they were going to sell you was too expensive, so you thought you'd browse the forums. If you truely have no budget, than i believe F1 is for you. If not, than slow down and do some research. I'm looking at the drz personally. however an alpine 9885 or eclipse cd3200 could be perfect for you. who knows!? what are you planning on doing with this HU. what is your actual budget? If you're willing to spend 20k i'll be more than willing to provide you with some more options. What is your actual budget? Dont say you dont have one, if you did you'd be having someone to hold your hand through it... god knows i would.
