Different people will tell you different things about different sound deadeners. But some facts lie: Do not use asphault-based Sound Deadener. They've been known to melt at above average temperatures and turn into a pool of tar. [Which you don't want]
I believe the most popular ones [Due to the balance of price / performance] is between RAAMmat and eDeadener.
You'll find some cheaper deadener / foot... but it might not be as good. There's also a lot better deadners-- but they're a lot more expensive. That's the average audiophile's choice. Unless they're hardcore into competition. Then they step it up to Dynamat XTreme and Second Skin and the sorts.
But either way, the only tools you'll need is some sort of cleaning solution to clean the metal of all the oils, to allow the deadener to stick, and some people use small rollers. Some people prefer to do it with their hands. Either way, just take your time and breathe. You'll also need some sort of sharp edge to cut the deadener with.
