Sound Deadening Overkill - Pics!

So I decided to go all out in the sound deadening department and I did about 3-4 layers of dynamat on the inner skin with 2 layers of ensolite on top of that (sorry no pics of that part of the install).

But now I have taken it a step further and decided to fiberglass seal all openings in the door panel. SO all the big gaping holes (and small ones) will now be fiberglassed over to create a seal (and strengthen?). For the lock and latch rods I put loom over them to allow movement. Here are the pics:

You can see the ensolite on the inner skin of the door, this made a huge difference overall. I started by bracing the holes with backstraps (I didnt have any chicken wire).

Second hole, when I do the passenger door I will do more bracing.

Here I cut fiberglass cloth to the size I wanted and used double sided sticky tape to hold it in place (helps with the mess). Where the lock rods come through I am going to seal it up with expanding foam.

Here is a closeup, I added another layer to the bottom of the top piece cause I cut it too short.

Here it is after its all fiberglassed, you can see some small patches where I covered the small holes. I didn´t do the ones on the right side because I have to relocate my crossovers so I can still have access to them. I will also need to relocate the plug in the smaller hole.

I know its ugly but thats what fiberglass is, It will all be covered in dynamat/ensolite when I am done. Right now I covered the other holes with dynamat.

I can definetly hear an improvement, better midrange and the mids are clearer.

I have only done the drivers door and am not done so I will update when I finish. Let me know what you think

um you do know that those holes are for releasing/equalizing internal pressure of the car when you shut the door right. or is there a vent im not seeing.

Fiberglass isn't thick enough if you can still see through it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
Nor is it very strong.

Plus, depending on the speaker in the door it could resonate badly. I know you said you're going to put sound deadening material over it so that will help in some respects.

Best thing about it is the holes look to be air tight which affects the Vas of the driver. If the panel is "dead" then it doesn't resonate within the passband of the driver which affects it's Fs. Point is, you might be done or you might need a lot more work. Trial and error, listening and experimentation is a must. Good luck.

its going to **** as$ if his window motor/regulator ever goes out //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/veryexcited.gif.c26a15f316d23068607f36ddacd7a7ab.gif
yeah, but it should be pretty sweet before that happens //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

i agree on the fiberglass being overkill, but thats a LOT of deadener, should have a great outcome.

Should be bad once its all done, just be careful covering every hole up. I have few layers of dynamat over my doors covering all the holes and stuff went bad with my regulators and motors and electrical for the window and the dealership wouldnt touch it until i took everything off.

Bad idea man...

Better pray to god you never have something go out in your door.

I'd cut that back out ASAP and get some 1/8" lexan and a heat gun and melt the lexan to the shape of the door skin...and use window weather stripping to hold it in...

edit:

MECP? oh lordy. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Eh, I knew I shouldn't have posted this on CA.com...

If anything goes out in the door it will literally take me 10 minutes to cut all that out. Its gonna get another layer then more dynamat/ensolite so I would have to take that off even if the FG wasn't there.

I think for the remaining two openings I will use ABS/weatherstripping (or ensolite) to seal it up.

Thanks for the comments though.

Atleast their wont be any moisture getting to it to cause a premature failure //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
