Sound Absorption for Road Noise. Jute vs Closed Cell Foam vs Mass Loaded Vinyl/Rubber

There's lots of debate as to which stick on butyl/asphalt based deadener sheet will reduce vibrations the best. These sheets do little to absorb road noise, so the next layer on top should be some sort of noise absorber and I'd like to get your guy's opinions on this.

What do you guys think is an effective absorption option? Jute? Closed Cell Foam? Mass Loaded Vinyl? From my experience, jute (the stuff that most automakers include as sound deadening) actually makes a noticeable difference. You can get rolls of this stuff locally and relatively cheaply from hardware stores. I've used foam based carpet underlay and that did next to nothing in terms of reducing road noise, which is why I am hesitant to pick up a stash of closed cell foam. As for MLV, I have no experience with the stuff.

Thoughts?

I personally have had very good results using CCF. I have three mass load layers in a dodge ram quad cab with the ccf over those.....it sounded ok before i put the ccf on top but it did make a noticeable difference in how much road noise and exhaust sound i hear while driving.....

i just bought a roll of the black CCF from Home Depot in the wood flooring section.....it's 1/4" thick and comes in a 100 sqft roll for $39.00......it does make a difference

The difference in some of those products, is that some are made specifically for car audio applications, and that's where they perform best. And some are made to provide a pad under the carpet in your home, and that's where those perform best.

In short, to keep road and exterior noises out, you use MLV. To cut out rattles and keep sound IN the car, you use CCF. Deadener and CCF are not created to reduce road noise. Using a product for it's intended purpose will achieve much more effective results.

i use CLD on the sheet metal, followed by CCF on the CLD, followed my a 100% coverage layer of MLV. It's effective. Also, difficult and expensive. I'd suggest starting with your doors unless you drive a car in which they are already well soundproofed.

CCF isnt used to keep sound in the car. MLV is used to keep out road noise and keep noise in the car. CCF's only function is to put a layer between panels that rub on each other.
