as stated, just chill out on the knobs until you get the fatty wire. youll be fine. as far as any suggestions, make sure the sub box is positioned as far back in the trunk (toward the back seat that is) to leave you the maximum amount of space between the cones and the trunk latch (for sound reasons, not just subwoofer care). Do the big 3 as soon as you can and you should be okay. look around for a high output alt casually until you find a good deal and have some extra cash on hand. when setting the gain, turn the AC on or whatever and turn your volume to the highest volume you will listen to music at. turn the gain up until you hear distortion or until voltage drops too low, then back it off a bit until you are safe. the subs might be hungry for power but you need to give them a little time to loosen up and keep your electrical from being strained.
