NooB!
I currently have a sony XM2002GTR. It claims it puts out 200 watts a channel, 500 bridged. I got it for 50 bux with a wiring kit, so thats the only reason i have it. I also have a MTX 8500 12" thats 500 RMS.

The problem is that when the amp is bridged, it overheats after about 3-4 songs when its blastin, and maybe 10 when its low. When its not bridged it doesnt overheat at all...but thats not helping me seeing as the sub can handle way more than 200 watts.

So I am in the market for a new amp that will not overheat and will put out about 500 RMS. Problem is, I'm on a tight budget. I looked at the Sony XM9001GTR

http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Sony-Mono-Channel-Amplifier-XMD9001GTR/sem/rpsm/oid/146009/catOid/-13095/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

Claims 550 watts RMS, and on that site its 187, + 30 for a 2 year warranty. I figured that even though sonys a bad brand, how could i go wrong? if something happens or it overheats i return it.

I just don't want another bad amp and have to go through all the trouble again. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all help

Could it possible be that you have a 4ohm DVC speaker wired down to 2ohm load and the amp is only stable to 4ohm when bridged?

But if that isn't the case and your lookin for a good 500w rms for cheap may wanna check out the profile amps, like this here http://www.crutchfield.com/S-7oc6A2Lg2Bs/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=120&I=489AP1000M

If that interest you, you can find them much cheaper on ebay. They are decent amps for a budget system.

Alright well. I'll defiantly stay away from sony then. How would I know if its wired down to 2 ohms? The sub is a 4 ohm sub as well as the amp. It is the MTX 8512-04. Not the dual coil one.

I'm thinking about saving some money, and getting a more expensive amp so I can actually run the sub how it should be. $300-400 probably. Any suggestions for a good amp in the range thats 500 watts 4 ohms?

Thanks again

With a single voice coil sub whose coil is a 4 Ohm voicecoil there isn't any method of wiring it to a 2 Ohm load.It will present the amp with a 4 Ohm load, period - there aren't any other options there.

Thanks dejawiz. Those are exactly what i was looking for.

What would be my best bet for one of those amps. I'm really liking the kicker zx1000 and the alpine. Since i have relatively no experience with amps, just anyones personal opinions

Thanks for all the help
