Sony Amps that bad? Alternatives??

Just looking for some insight... I currently have the Sony 760 W. and am running it in the setup described in my signature below. I'm planning for a system down the line a bit, and I was wondering... I've read all the criticisms of Sony, especially their amps, but I was wondering if a lot of these were based on reputation or on experience....

Anybody give examples of why they're so crappy? Is it sound quality? Production quality? Does it overheat really easily? Is the power output grossly over-rated? I was looking at the 800 mono they make, because wired at 1 ohm it's supposed to put out about 1000 Watts - any owners out there who could critique it for me? I would really appreciate some genuine feedback as to why people don't like them so I can make some good decisions down the road.

And, of course, can anybody list some good alternatives around the same price range (~$400) that would push about the same power??

Thanks,

Mike

try US Acoustics. they put out quite a bit, sound good, and are built like tanks. plus they're pretty cheap:)

Originally posted by Jmac Sony's best product is their amps, in my opinion. Sadly, they still ****. Build quality is mediocre, they overheat easily, they're overrated by a fair margin, etc.

Good alternatives ...

Soundstream

Pioneer Premier PRS-X720

Phoenix Gold

Literally tons of others ...
Well, this is all in preparation for buying a 12" Brahma which I will probably throw in a sealed 1.5'^3 box, and because it looks like I can get one really cheap (like, $50) I was wondering - okay, maybe more like hoping - that that sony which SUPPOSEDLY can reach 1000W X 1 @ 1 ohm. might be able to power it fairly well. But, if what you guys say is true, then pushing the amp as far as the Brahma might need will probably end up frying it.

I know everyone recommends the JBL 1200.1, but with the exception of IkeSounds and Ebay they're kind of expensive - are there any other amps people can recommend for that particular sub and/or setup?? Just want to be aware of all my options. Going more for SQ than SPL, but I would like it to hit a bit, too. And this is more for daily driving than competing - like I said, I kinda want to keep it at or below $300 - $400.

Thanks!!

Mike

Do you know if it's 1-ohm stable, though? I would probably run it in paralell to the DVC Brahma, and their website doesn't say the output stability level.

for a single brahma? i'd suggest RE's amp, the RE35-1D. stable to 1 ohm, 1500Wrms @ 1 ohm, and although on they're website it says $599 MSRP, i e-mailed them, they said $369 shipped. it'll sound much better then the JBL amp. http://respl.com/amppics.html plus it's got clipping, speaker short, and thermal protection:)

Thanks, man... I think I might look into that. Much appreciated. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
