Something I learned today

The reason for going diesel is you can DIY the fuel pretty cheaply //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Used vegetable oil that's been processed with a few chemicals can be run in an unmodified diesel. Get waste oil from fast food restaurants and filter it, and your fuel costs are well under what ethanol would be.
Fast food restaurant oil will drastically shorten the life of the engine. I remember when they had a documentary on going coast to coast on that stuff, they went through 3 engines doing nothing but freeway travel in a diesel van.

I will agree that the govt. wants to control the aspect of energy. It is smart for them to do so. If they didn't try and control it, another country would. This would increase our dependancy on overseas energy. Which is exactly the position we are in now. IMHO, this is a bad position.

As far as the govt. subsidizing farmers to produce less corn, it has nothing to do with controlling energy. Your proffessor has some interesting theories, but I will offer you a different view. The subsidies are to keep the farmers from growing too much carn, causing a huge surplus. This, in effect, would drive the price of corn very low and cause market saturation. The govt. controls many aspects of the market in this manner. I urge you to look for yourself. Ethanol is too far out to be a factor in this equation. As a consumer, lower prices sounds great. As a producer (farmer) your profit will diminish from the low prices and you will soon find youself broke, sitting on a huge stockpile of corn in an already saturated market.

This is just my take on this. I am no expert. I just love analyzing economic situations.

and he hates bush doesn't he. 10 bucks says when a dem gets elected president in 2008, ethanol will magically become expensive because they'res a low supply and high demand.

if you've read anything about ethanol, you'll know that no matter how much corn is grown, ethanol production will be way below gas production (that is, until we run out of gas...) so for the time being, since ethanol is scarce, the law of supply and demand dictates that the price will be high. it doesn't take subsidies to make the price go up.
Im not sure about his political view. He wasnt ranting about it or anything, he was just simply telling us about it.

farmers are not paid to not grow corn

farmers are not paid to not grow corn
Yes they are. Even if not for the specific reason I stated, which other people dont 100% agree with, they are still paid to not grow for other reason. Someone even posted a link to one.

10 bucks sayd he's a lib //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
He may be actually. He gives up lots of problem relating to drugs, A LOT. Like on an exam today, he related the substitute values of Barbituates and Cocain.

yeah but the only beef i have with that is we really dont know how much oil is in the earth if you think about it. couple years ago they found a reserve in russia that could supposedly run the earth for like 40 years. but who really knows.
In Mother Russia car drives you!
