some really bad rattling

hey.. i just aquired 2 12z to go in my 98 civic. I bought an amp, but can't get it to work because we think one of my cables are bad... neway... so we wired them into my rear speakers. It was fine at first, but then all of a suddent the metal components of the dash started to rattle really bad at certain frequencies. It annoyed me so i unhooked the subs and hooked everything up how it was originally. Well, the rattling continued and now I can't listen to any heavy bass w/o it doin that freaking rattling. Anybody got any ideas? my friend suggested using zip ties to secure some foam to the bottom of the metal? good idea or bad? would it be better in between the rear panel and the metal? or would it help at all? I don't have enough money for dynamat or any other sound deadening material... I am gonna have to do it someway cheap......
